Burn Injury Model Systems

Burn Injury Model Systems The BMS Program began in 1994 to improve care and outcomes for individuals with burn injuries. There are 4 BMS centers funded.

The Burn Model System (BMS) Program began in 1994 to improve care and outcomes for individuals with burn injuries. BMS centers conduct research and contribute follow-up data to the BMS National Longitudinal Database. BMS centers also conduct research, provide education, and disseminate information with the goal of improving long-term functional, vocational, cognitive, and quality-of-life outcomes

for individuals with burn injury. The BMS Program is funded by the National Institute on Disability, Independent Living, and Rehabilitation Research (NIDILRR), a Center within the Administration for Community Living (ACL), U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), to improve care and outcomes for individuals with burn injuries. The Model System Knowledge Translation Center (MSKTC) is national center that translates health information into easy to understand language and formats for patients with spinal cord injury, traumatic brain injury, and burn injury. The MSKTC works closely with researchers in the BMS to develop free, research-based resources for people living with burn injury and their supporters. Meet Sarah Conner, an MSKTC Burn Ambassador from Texas and a passionate advocate for burn survivors. After experiencing a severe burn injury in 2011, Sarah turned her journey into purpose. She now facilitates hospital support groups, collaborates with trauma nurses, and ensures burn survivors receive vital MSKTC resources that support emotional and physical recovery.
