Syracuse Section of the National Council of Negro Women The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) is a council of national African American women’s organizations and community-based sections. Mrs.

The National Council of Negro Women (NCNW) was founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, child of slave parents, distinguished educator and government consultant. Bethune saw the need for harnessing the power and extending the leadership of African American women through a national organization. NCNW is an "organization of organizations" and serves as a clearing house for the activities of women. Fr

om the beginning, women of all racial and cultural backgrounds were included and welcomed to work together. Bethune described "... the need for a united organization of women to open doors for our young women, united so that when it speaks, its power will be felt. The National Council of Negro Women, Inc. (NCNW) is a nonprofit membership organization founded in 1935 by Mary McLeod Bethune, a child of slave parents, distinguished educator and government consultant. With a mission to lead, develop and advocate for women of African descent as they support their families and communities, NCNW addresses issues of human welfare and rights through public education, community service and advocacy. NCNW reaches nearly 4 million women through 39 national affiliate organizations and more than 240 sections through activities such as:

Disseminating information about issues affecting African American women and their families. Promoting healthy lifestyles and behaviors through wellness projects. Sponsoring events, such as the Black Family Reunion Celebration, to build on strengths and traditional values. Training and supporting women and youth in career development and community leadership. Supporting economic development and entrepreneurship. Providing mentoring and educational support to our young people. Centrally organized to fill the gaps in our communities, NCNW calls on a core of volunteers in 34 states to address local needs. NCNW brings to these initiatives the added support of a network of thousands of women whose collective efforts enhance community service and actions. We have truly united to enhance our power for the benefit of African and African American women and their families. Since our founding, NCNW has focused on fulfilling our mission by launching programs that provide critical services to women, children and families. Even a brief sampling of our programs and partnerships illustrates the breadth and depth of our program offerings.

Tonight the Syracuse Section of NCNW won 1st place for the 2026 Oberlander Awards from the Syracuse Federation of Women’s Clubs for our ‘Immunize and Insure’ program. 🏆

Since 1932, the Oberlander Cup has been awarded annually to clubs whose civic and programmatic contributions in the last year have been deserving of recognition.

Immunize and Insure was created in 2024 to respond to gaps in vaccinations and health care access.

The program is a partnership between Wegmans pharmacy, the Samaritan Center, Good Health Wins, Excellus Blue Cross and Blue Shield and other community service providers.

Council affiliate organizations such as Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. Theta Omicron Sigma Chapter, Onondaga County Zetas, and Lambda Kappa Mu Sorority, Inc. were also engaged and answered the call to collaborate.

Since its inception, Immunize and Insure has connected over 500 community members to health information, insurance enrollment, and seasonal vaccines. Across all events held, approximately $3,000 worth of in-kind service was donated to the community. ✊🏾

In addition to being the owners of the cup for the next year, the section also received a $200 check to go toward programming and a certificate celebrating exemplary service to the community.

Thank you to all of our partners and collaborators. Many hands make the work light and the community is better when we work together.

Congratulations, Syracuse Section! Keep showing up and doing work that matters. 💜

Honoring Core Four sheroe, Shirley Chisholm. A truth teller and a fearless advocate for justice. As the first Black woman elected to Congress and the first Black woman to run for President, she showed us what it means to be unbought and unbossed.

Her legacy continues to inspire generations to stand tall, speak out, and lead with purpose.

We are still smiling over the love, generosity, and collective care that showed up for our 2025 Wrapsody Fundraiser 💝

Because of YOU, our volunteers, donors, and supporters, we wrapped gifts which will in turn allow us to continue wrapping families in joy, service, and programming. Every ribbon tied, every contribution made, and every moment given helped us meet our goal and extend our reach right here in our community.

To our volunteers, thank you for giving your time, your energy, and your hearts.

To our patrons and donors, thank you for trusting us with your generosity.

To everyone who showed up in any way, know that your impact matters.

This is what it looks like when Black women lead with purpose and move together with intention.

Wishing you and your loved ones a joyful holiday season filled with peace, rest, and abundance. ✨

Happy Founders Day, NCNW!

Today we proudly celebrate ninety years of sisterhood, service, and collective impact through the National Council of Negro Women. Our legacy began in 1935 under the visionary leadership of Dr. Mary McLeod Bethune, who believed deeply in the power of organized Black women to transform communities and secure meaningful opportunities for generations to come.

Since then, NCNW has grown into one of the most influential Black women’s organizations in the nation. More than three hundred campus and community based sections connect with thirty two national women’s organizations, collectively empowering over two million women and their families.

As a Syracuse Section, we honor this legacy by continuing to advocate, convene, and equip our community with knowledge, skills, and connection. Our work addresses real needs across our region, including caregiving support, civic participation, economic mobility, social capital development, and advancing health, education, and racial equity. We are committed to building pathways, strengthening families, and nurturing leaders who move with purpose.

Founders Day reminds us that the work of NCNW has always been rooted in courage, collaboration, and community uplift. May we continue to learn, listen, and lead together while shaping a future where every Black woman and her family can thrive.

With gratitude for every member, partner, and friend who walks alongside us. The journey continues, and Syracuse is honored to carry the torch forward.

Happy 90th Founders Day to our beloved National Council of Negro Women.
