People are being killed by federal immigration agents—and Congress is still funding it. Since the start of this administration, multiple lives have been lost, investigations have been obstructed, and accountability has collapsed. This is not isolated misconduct. It is a civil rights, humanitarian, and constitutional crisis.

Today, the Supreme Court heard arguments regarding the current Administration’s attempt to expand executive authority over the Federal Reserve by asserting the power to remove sitting governors—an effort illustrated through the attempted removal of Dr. Lisa D. Cook from her position on the Board. NCNW strongly condemns these actions.

The attempt to fire Dr. Cook—the first Black woman to serve as a Governor of the Federal Reserve—represents a dangerous overreach of executive power and a direct threat to the independence of one of the nation’s most critical economic institutions. If successful, this effort would place the economic security of every American at the mercy of political posturing. It would weaken the Federal Reserve’s ability to make data-driven, people-centered decisions and could fundamentally alter the makeup of institutions that must reflect the full diversity of this nation.

Let us be clear; the baseless charges levied against Dr. Cook are a transparent attempt to circumvent the Federal Reserve’s long-standing independence. A ruling in favor of this Administration would carry severe consequences for America’s economic stability, opening the central bank to political pressure, manipulation, and corruption.

For decades, bipartisan consensus has recognized that an independent Federal Reserve promotes stability, protects consumers, and limits the ability of any president to manipulate monetary policy for political gain.

NCNW urges the Supreme Court to uphold the constitutional balance of powers and preserve the independence of the Federal Reserve from executive interference. The strength of our democracy—and the stability of our economy—depend on it. (Photo Credit - CBS News)
