Securities Investor Protection Corporation When a brokerage firm is closed, SIPC steps in and, within certain limits, works to return your cash, stock, and other securities you had at the firm.

SIPC was created under the Securities Investor Protection Act as a non-profit membership corporation. SIPC oversees the liquidation of member broker-dealers that close when the broker-dealer is bankruptcy or in financial trouble, and customer assets are missing. In a liquidation under the Securities Investor Protection Act, SIPC and the court-appointed Trustee work to return customers' securities and cash as quickly as possible. Within limits, SIPC expedites the return of missing customer property by protecting each customer up to $500,000 for securities and cash (including a $250,000 limit for cash only).

Understanding SIPC protection is an important part of being an informed investor.

SIPC has updated its “How SIPC Protects You” brochure, providing a clear overview of SIPC protection and what happens when a SIPC-member brokerage firm fails financially.

The updated brochure is available at the link below, along with a Spanish version. Please feel free to share these resources with investors who may find them helpful.

These replace the prior versions on SIPC's website allowing all existing hyperlinks to remain operational.

Printed versions are being made available to SIPC member firms for distribution to their customers.

Other FINRA team members Michael had the opportunity to visit included Nathaniel Stankard, Chris Rosello, Jennifer Piorko Mitchell, Jeanette Wingler, Racquel Russell, and Darlene Brown.

SIPC appreciates the opportunity to engage with our colleagues at FINRA and looks forward to continuing our collaborative work together in support of investors and the strength of our securities markets.
