Kyra's Rescue

Kyra's Rescue We are a small group who saves homeless dogs primarily from Turkey. We seek to bring these dogs to the states and find their forever family.

We are a small group of friends and animal lovers in the Washington, D.C. metro area who volunteer to save homeless dogs primarily from Turkey. We have family and friends in Turkey who contact us to find homes in America for the dogs that have no hopes of finding anyone to adopt them. Turkish dog shelters are typically no-kill. On the face of it, this seems like a good thing, however, dogs who are

not adopted are subject to 1 of 2 fates: they are either dumped in rural areas, left to fend for themselves against the harsh elements and acts of abuse and cruelty from street vagrants, the small and the young sometimes used as bait for fighting dogs, and to compete with wild dog packs for food and water; if not released, the dogs remain in grossly overcrowded, under resourced shelters receiving minimal care and attention, often with little food or water. We seek to bring these homeless, hopeless survivors to families in the United States that are willing to open their homes and hearts to these wonderful dogs. We ask potential adopters to complete an application and to give a small fee for each adoption. We want to ensure that each adopted dog goes to a home that truly wants to make them a part of their family. Kyra's Legacy Rescue is inspired by other rescue groups that save dogs in Turkey and find loving homes in the US.

MEET OZZIE: Professional Yard Entertainer & Cicada Negotiator

Ozzie isn’t into fancy toys. His toys are, empty water bottles, sticks, the air itself 😁. Watch him, he grabs a stick or bottle, runs joyfully, hops in the air to catch it, then proudly carries it around like it’s gold. He’ll entertain himself for HOURS. And the cicadas? Oh my goodness. Ozzie is very cautious to touch them, but he has very heated conversations with them for hours. It’s the funniest, most hilarious thing you’ll ever see. No house fly stands a chance in this yard either.

About Ozzie: He is 5 yrs old, small breed mix, terrier.
Personality: Joyful, low-key, extremely well-behaved, loyal
House-trained: 200%
Leash: Walks beautifully
Superpower: Entertains himself in the yard, then comes inside and quietly waits for you
Good with:Kids ✓ Cats ✓ Dogs ✓ - he lives with 10!

Ozzie just wants a yard, someone to be loyal to, and cicadas to debate with.

If you work in an office - perfect. He chills quietly at home all day and is READY for fun time when you get home.

Ozzie has waited so long because he’s easy. Too easy. We forgot to brag about him.

Let’s change that. To apply: visit www.kyrasrescue.com
Location:Leesburg, VA.

Please share Ozzie.

MEET OZZIE 💙 The Dog Everyone Overlooked

This is Ozzie. And it’s our fault he’s still waiting.

Ozzie has been with us for a long time. Not because there’s anything wrong with him. But because he’s so easy, so pleasant, and so low-key that we forgot to shout about him.

About Ozzie:
Age: 5
Breed:Small breed mix — we see some terrier in there
Personality:* Extremely well-behaved, loyal, and wonderfully balanced
House-trained:200% house broken
Leash: Walks beautifully on leash
Loves:Playing and running in a fenced yard. He’ll run and run, then come sit and just enjoy the atmosphere. When you call him, he comes home.

The best part for busy people: If you work in an office, don’t worry. Ozzie sits quietly at home and waits for you to come home for fun time. Zero drama.

Ozzie is smart, loyal to his person, and so easy to live with.
Good with: Kids ✓ | Cats ✓ | Dogs ✓
He currently lives with 10 dogs, but he would also be perfect as an only dog who gets all the love.

Ozzie isn’t asking for much. Just a soft bed, someone to be loyal to, and a yard to zoom in.

If you’ve been looking for a calm, loving, no-drama dog who will be your shadow... this is Ozzie.

To apply visit www.kyrasrescue.com
Location:Leesburg, VA. .

Please share Ozzie. The right person is missing him and doesn’t know it yet.

Meet Gizmo 💙 The Tiniest Fighter with the Biggest Heart

We’ve rescued hundreds of dogs. Goldens, terriers, mixes. Big dogs, fluffy dogs, curly dogs, puppies, seniors. You name it.

But we’ve never had one quite like Gizmo.

At just 5 lbs, he’s the tiniest dog to ever come through Kyra’s Rescue. And what a journey he’s had.

Gizmo spent his first 1-1.5 years neglected. When he came to us, he didn’t know what it meant to be part of a family. So he did what only the smartest little dogs do: he watched. He studied everyone in the house. He worked _so hard_ to learn the rules, to trust, to be good.

And he succeeded. Gizmo is now the most agreeable, eager-to-please little guy you’ll ever meet. He has an iron will to be “the good boy.” He’s quiet, observant, loves home-cooked meals, and follows you like a shadow. He’s truly remarkable.

*A quick medical update:*
While we were processing an adoption for Gizmo, we noticed a small bulge on his belly. Our vet confirmed it’s a tiny umbilical hernia — something he was born with. Umbilical hernias are very common in Chihuahuas and are fixed during his neuter. It’s not painful, not dangerous, and not a big deal. He gained some healthy weight here with us, which made it more noticeable. We will have it repaired before adoption.

Unfortunately, his prospective adopter decided Gizmo wasn’t the right fit after learning about the hernia. We’re disappointed, but we believe everything happens for a reason. Gizmo’s perfect person is still out there.

*Gizmo’s Promise:* He’ll make you laugh every single day and repay you with the kind of loyalty only a tiny rescued dog can give. He’s ready to be someone’s whole worl

This headline broke me today:
“Puppy found locked in Palm Coast garage without food, water, light dies from organ failure”

A puppy. Locked in a garage. No food. No water. No light. Dead from organ failure.

This is why we have adoption guidelines, step by step.

We see the comments:
“damn guidelines”
“this is why I go to a breeder”
“you’re forcing people to shop instead of adopt”

I get it. It feels personal. It feels slow. It feels like we don’t trust you.

Here’s the truth: It’s not about you. It’s about the promise we made to him.

Every dog we rescue comes with trauma we can’t always see. Some were starved. Some were beaten. Some were locked away and forgotten — just like that puppy in Flagler County.

When we pull them from a shelter, from the street, from a cruelty case, we make them a vow:
“You will never be hurt again. You will never go hungry. You will never be alone in the dark.”

One rushed adoption to the wrong home breaks that vow forever. And the dog pays the price. Not us. Not the adopter. The dog.

We will take hurt feelings over a dead dog every single time.

The Flagler County Sheriff said: “There is nothing in this world that makes me more angry than innocent animals being abused and neglected.”

Us too, Sheriff. That’s why we screen. That’s why we wait. That’s why we verify.

To the adopters who stick with us through the process: Thank you. You’re the reason our dogs sleep safe tonight. You’re the reason they never end up as a headline like this one.

To the people angry at rescue guidelines: I wish you could meet the dogs we’ve seen. I wish you didn’t have to. But until animal cruelty stops, our standards won’t drop.

We’re not “playing God.” We’re keeping promises to souls who can’t speak for themselves.

That puppy should have had 15 years. He got weeks.

For him, and every dog after him — we’ll stay diligent as long as it takes.

Rest in peace, Sunset | A Florida puppy has died after it was allegedly locked in a garage without food, water, or natural light, the Flagler County Sheriff's Office said.

Sunset's owner has now been arrested and charged with animal cruelty. 🔗⬇️

Gizmo says: Hope everyone is having a safe + happy Sunday 💛

He had an upset stomach yesterday so I spent the day making sure he stayed hydrated and symptom-free. Lots of laundry, but he’s feeling much better today and even cleaned up his chicken + gravy meal twice!

We’re so lucky Gizmo has so many people cheering for him.

KR is 100% volunteer-run. We review applications in order as time allows around other animals in our care. I’m managing Gizmo’s care + adoption process directly right now, so please be patient with response times.

Our goal was never “home fast”. It’s “home for life” — where he feels safe, loved, and never ends up back in rescue or a shelter. That’s why we ask questions, photos, and do phone interviews. Every dog is different, and this is a huge responsibility.

Rescue isn’t about speed. If you need a dog immediately, KR may not be the right fit — local shelters have thousands of dogs waiting today. Gizmo is one lucky pup, and we owe him patience + the right match.

Help us help Gizmo faster:
1. Read adoption guidelines at www.kyrasrescue.com BEFORE applying
2. No foster applications for Gizmo
3. DC/MD/VA area only
4. No DMs to meet him before applying
5. We email every applicant. If selected for next steps, we’ll contact you. No updates in between please.

We only have one Gizmo. We want to get this right for him ❤️

Thank you for understanding,

Good morning, Gizmo.

I can’t imagine what mornings were like for you in that shanty. Dark. Filthy. Cold. Crowded with other breeding dogs who’d never known a kind hand.

But look at you now.

Sunlight on your face instead of darkness.
A soft bed instead of metal cages.
Space to stretch instead of being crowded.
My voice saying “good morning” instead of silence.

You survived 1.5 years of that. You don’t have to survive anymore.

Good morning, sweet boy. Welcome to your real life.

Gizmo is rescued from a breeding shanty. Now he just wants mornings like this. Apply: www.kyrasrescue.com.
