The DC Arts and Humanities Education Collaborative believes that the arts —inclusive of music, theater, dance, visual arts, media arts— and the humanities are central to the education of every student. The DC Collaborative works with its members to provide equitable access to high-quality arts and humanities education for all DC public and public charter school students.

This Spring, students discovered the wonders of Kenilworth Aquatic Gardens through a unique, immersive iSpy adventure!

This field trip invited students to explore the gardens using all five senses. Equipped with iSpy game sheets, students solved clues that asked them to use sight, touch, smell, and even sound to uncover natural treasures and habitats within the park.

Guided by Friends of Kenilworth team and National Park Service Rangers, participants sharpened their observation skills, connected with nature in memorable ways, and gained a deeper appreciation for DC’s only national park dedicated to aquatic plants.

While the museum stays open late, enjoy a full day of free activities outdoors featuring live music performances, powerful spoken word, cooking demonstrations, front-porch foodways conversations, youth activities, and gardening. 🧶Join DC-Native artist, Dwayne Lawson-Brown aka “Crochet Kingpin”, as he leads us in a workshop on the art of crocheting wearable art.

✨Participants will learn the basics of crocheting and have an opportunity to practice chains, single crochet, and double crochet. Feel free to bring your crochet works in progress. Experienced crocheters will receive a pattern for lace blossoms to explore and work on. The workshop is suited for ages 8 and up.

Earlier this month, we hosted a workshop led by Ashley Cuthbertson at the National Museum of Women in the Arts.

The workshop focused on understanding and reducing burnout. Participants were equipped with equity-centered tools and practices that reduce burnout by addressing systemic stressors and streamlining planning and decision-making through culturally responsive approaches.

Titled, “Sustainability in Crisis:
Using Equity-Centered Practices to Reduce Burnout in Arts Classrooms,” this professional learning intensive was designed to help arts educators and teaching artists move beyond survival mode and toward sustainable practice.

Rather than focusing on personal resilience or “self-care,” this session reframed burnout as a systems issue and introduced practical, equity-centered strategies that reduce strain, clarify expectations, and support long-term sustainability.

Participants engaged in hands-on learning, collaborative analysis, and real-time practice grounded in authentic arts education and teaching artist contexts.

Attendees were also offered stipends for participating. This workshop was made possible thanks to funding from the DC Commission on the Arts and Humanities.
