Dear NAME Family & Friends,

I want to let you know -- or remind you -- about the upcoming Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference, next weekend, Sat. Oct. 20, at Madison High School in Portland, Ore. Check out the conference program at www.nwtsj.org to see the extraordinary array of workshops and presentations. Registration is open now.

The keynote speaker is Bob Peterson, a founding editor of Rethinking Schools magazine, and an author of several articles at the Zinn Education Project website. Bob co-edited Rethinking Columbus, a book that many of you are familiar with. He'll be talking about "One Teacher's Journey to Teaching and Organizing for Justice."

And there will be workshops offered by a number of other teacher/writers whose work appears at www.zinnedproject.org: Rethinking Schools editors Linda Christensen and Wayne Au; "If We Knew Our History" contributors Moe' Yonamine and Ruth Shagoury; Hyung Nam, one of the co-authors of our curriculum on the film about Daniel Ellsberg, The Most Dangerous Man in America. I'll be leading a workshop about a new role play I've written on "Coal, Climate, and the World."

The Northwest Teaching for Social Justice Conference is a day-long festival of hope, inspiration, and imagination. In addition to the more than 60 workshops offered, we'll also have a large resource fair, including a full display of Rethinking Schools magazines and books.

Please join us in Portland and let others know about the conference. www.nwtsj.org

Warmly,

Bill Bigelow
