TODAY, the D.C. Council unanimously voted to officially recognize September 2026 as Kinship Care Month in Washington, D.C.

A special thank you to Councilmembers Zachary Parker, Charles Allen Ward 6 Councilmember, Anita Bonds, Matthew Frumin, Janeese Lewis George, Esq., Chairman Phil Mendelson , Robert White, and Trayon White, who introduced the Resolution. Your leadership helps shine a light on the vital role of kinship families in our community.

On June 25, our families, Community Board members, staff, and Vice President of the Corporate Board, Donnequa E. Grantham, came together for a fun day at Nationals Park to enjoy the Nationals vs. Phillies game.

We were so glad to have Donnequa join this community event. Her presence, alongside our families, Community Board members, and staff, reflected our shared commitment to supporting kinship families and strengthening the connections that make our community so special.

Our FY 2025 Annual Impact Report Is Here!
When Marcia Moore walked into our legal clinic, cradling her two-month-old great-niece Legacy, she needed help fast. We represented Marcia in her custody case and later helped her adopt Legacy. In December 2025, the Final Adoption Decree was issued, and Marcia officially became Legacy’s mother! Read more about her story and other relative caregivers like her in the Report.

The Report shows how your support made these accomplishments possible: caregivers gaining legal rights, children finding safety, and policy wins that will support kinship families for years to come.

Kymberly Holmes, one of our DCKC Community Board members, celebrated with Janeese Lewis George at the Howard Theatre.

A longtime supporter of kinship families, D.C. Councilmember Janeese Lewis George has worked to support the needs of caregivers and the children they raise. We were honored to recognize her with our Kinship Caregiver Champion Award in 2024 for her commitment to kinship families in D.C.

We are grateful to Impact100 DC for selecting DC KinCare Alliance as a recipient of a 2026 Impact Grant. This investment will support our continued work providing legal representation, advocacy, education, and critical support services to kinship caregivers who open their homes and hearts to children when their parents are unable to care for them.

We are honored that Impact100 DC recognizes the vital role kinship families play in our community and the importance of ensuring caregivers have the resources and support they need to create safe, stable, and nurturing homes where children can thrive.

Last weekend, caregivers, children, DCKC staff, and community members and partners gathered for the DC KinCare Community Board Celebration, a special afternoon honoring our children's achievements, voices, and dreams.
Together, we enjoyed a story by Barrington Smallwood, celebrated the achievements of our children with special awards, and engaged in advocacy activities.
