As we kick off Biomedical Research Awareness Day (BRAD) this week, AMP published a Letter to the Editor to the Washington Post in response to an op-ed about the need to eliminate the use of dogs in .

Dogs remain essential in select research cases, when no other species can answer a proposed question. Researchers, veterinarians, and animal caretakers take their responsibility to care for these animals very seriously.

Please read, share, and extend your support for strong science and strong animal care! 🎉✨

Americans for Medical Progress has issued a statement addressing misinformation regarding “transgender mice” in biomedical research. Since the President’s mention of animal research in his Joint Address to Congress earlier this month, there has been confusion surrounding the distinction between transgender and transgenic mic, the latter of which are generic ally modified for important medical studies.

Our goal at AMP is to provide clarity on these topics and ensure accurate reporting on the critical role of animals in advancing medical and veterinary science.

Research in reproductive biology provides hope to countless individuals, whether in growing their families or enabling people to live longer, healthier lives when faced with a cancer diagnosis.

March 12, 2025 Americans for Medical Progress (AMP) issued statement today to correct misinformation circulating about “transgender mice” in research. Recent claims about federally funded research on “transgender mice” are inaccurate and misleading. This research is not related to gender [.....

This week, the President's Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) submitted a 6-page letter to outgoing President Biden titled, "Future Opportunities for Science and Technology to Impact the Nation." 📝📑

The letter emphasizes the importance of basic science research as a foundation for innovation and societal progress. One of the elements I find most noteworthy about the letter is its reference to a trend initially reported by the National Science Board: business and industrial investments in science are outpacing federal/public investments in R&D. In fact, the business sector accounted for 76% of total U..S. R&D expenditures according to the 2024 NSB report.

As the letter highlights, industry research plays such a significant role in the biomedical research landscape; however, we must not overlook how much of this sector's success is derived from basic science. Basic research findings serve as the starting point for translational research--knowledge that industry researchers can leverage to design clinical trials, develop new drugs and medical devices, and improve existing treatments for humans (and animals!) alike.

PCAST's letter serves as an important reminder for the community as we continue to strategize on providing strong support for biomedical research. 👏👏👏

Today, the President’s Council of Advisors on Science and Technology (PCAST) sent a letter to President Biden on the crucial role that science and technology plays in empowering our nation. The letter provides examples of future challenges and opportunities that our dynamic science and technology ...

🤔 DYK: January is Substance Use Disorder Treatment month. According to a national survey, among people aged 12 or older in 2022, 48.7 million people had a substance use disorder in the past year.

And did you ALSO know… animal research has significantly contributed to our understanding of addiction and the development of treatments for those struggling?

Not only have animals helped us understand how the brains “reward system” operates (thank you, basic science research!) but they’ve helped save countless lives by ensuring drugs like methadone, buprenorphine, and naloxone, are safe and effective. 🧠🔬

We are so indebted to animals and the community working tirelessly to help bring more cures to patients! 👏👏

What better way to kick off 2025 than with a webinar! 💻👏

Join us on January 28, 12:00 pm (ET) for our first webinar of the year, “Introduction to Animal Research Policy & Why It Matters”

This session will cover the fundamental laws and policies governing animal research, highlight the ethical frameworks in place, and explore the challenges the research community is facing in maintaining robust and responsible scientific progress.

Whether you're an advocate, a researcher, a veterinarian, or simply interested in understanding the intersection of science and policy, this webinar will provide valuable insights into how robust animal research policies support groundbreaking discoveries and protect the welfare of animals involved.

Fascinating!! 🤩 Recent studies published this week suggest that skin can produce its own antibodies when fighting infections.

Research with mice showed scientists that the skin even has “immune memory,” an ability to recognize and remember a pathogen if exposed to it again.

These findings can inform the way we develop vaccines, including potentially needle-free vaccines.

Thank you, animals! Read more ⬇️⬇️⬇️

The finding could lead to the development of needle-free vaccines.

Ever wonder how researchers are working to better understand the neuroscience of various mental health conditions? 🧐 🧠

A fascinating new study published in Nature showed that communication between two parts of the brains--the amygdala and hippocampus--is disrupted in mice susceptible to anhedonia, a common symptom of depression that describes an inability to experience pleasure or enjoyment.

Thanks to research in mice, scientists could examine the neural mechanisms that make animals vulnerable or resilient to anhedonia. The authors suggest that altering specific neural pathways (specifically the connections between the ventral CA1 region of the hippocampus and the basolateral amygdala) offers a potential way to enhance resilience and, hopefully, improve treatments for conditions like depression.

Thank you, ! 👏

Examination of the neural activity in the basolateral amygdala and ventral CA1 of mice during tasks or rest following exposure to social stress reveals signatures of resilience and susceptibility to stress.
