Few Americans see ma*****na use as morally wrong. But step outside the U.S., and the picture looks very different.

Do Americans trust journalists?

Our new data shows that a majority of Americans express low confidence in journalists to act in the public’s best interests.

In focus groups, participants described feeling that trust isn’t automatic and that they have to evaluate journalists more carefully.

The American family has witnessed substantial changes since the 1970s.

Americans marry and have children at later ages than they once did, and fewer Americans are doing these things at all.

Living arrangements have also shifted over this period: A smaller share of children live with two married parents, and a greater share of the population lives in multigenerational households.

The landscape of local news in the United States has changed significantly as Americans have been turning away from print and television and toward digital media.

Attention to local news has declined since 2016, mirroring these trends. In 2025, 21% of Americans say they follow local news very closely, down from 37% in 2016.
