Every week, 36 young people aged 11–17 gather at Zip Zap's Academy in Cape Town. They juggle, balance, tumble, and fly. They laugh, learn, and grow. All of it is free – thanks to donors who believe in the power of circus to change lives.
Ukwanda is more than a circus class. It's a safe training space where young people from diverse backgrounds come together and discover their potential. It's where:

The impact of Ukwanda is visible in the growth of its participants – and the numbers tell an inspiring story.
In 2024, 36 participants engaged in 55 training sessions across the year. Twice-weekly sessions allowed them to focus on their preferred disciplines and invest real time into developing their abilities. Physical assessments tracked progress, and instructors watched as children grew not just in skill, but in confidence and enthusiasm.
Participants showed remarkable growth in:
Technical ability and resilience
Adaptability and leadership
Teamwork and pro-social behaviours
The highlight? The Annual Showcase and Family Day – where children confidently demonstrated their showmanship and skills, giving parents a glimpse of the opportunities available in the performing arts.

Why does Ukwanda exist?
Because in South Africa, many talented young individuals simply cannot afford the costs associated with developing their skills in a safe environment with trained instructors.
The reality is that access to quality arts training – with proper facilities, equipment, and expert coaches – is often reserved for those who can pay. This leaves countless gifted young people without a pathway to develop their potential.
Ukwanda removes that barrier.
This program brings children from outreach and youth streams together to learn, create, and work toward a common goal – completely free of charge to participants.
Whether a child's journey began in The Hood, Ubuntu, or another community program, Ukwanda provides a focused, supportive space where they can continue to grow. No one is turned away because they can't afford it.
That's equity in action.

This month, we're featuring Ukwanda – one of Zip Zap's vibrant youth programs in Cape Town, South Africa.
"Ukwanda" means "to grow" and "to develop" in isiXhosa – and that's exactly what this program does. Formerly known as Simunye, Ukwanda is an entry-level skills development program for children aged 11 to 17 from all backgrounds.
Meeting twice weekly, participants dive into the world of circus arts across all disciplines. But Ukwanda is about more than learning tricks. It's about:
Developing circus, creative, and collaborative skills
Working together toward a common goal
Preparing for the Annual Showcase – a highlight of the year
Creating a pathway to the advanced Zappers program
This is where talent is discovered. Where friendships are forged. Where young people from diverse backgrounds come together to learn, create, and grow as one. 🎪✨

MOYA is currently touring the world – with 2026 performances scheduled in Romania, France, Switzerland, and Réunion Island.
But the dazzling show you see on stage is only possible because of what happens behind the scenes.
Every performer in MOYA began their journey in Zip Zap's outreach programs – Ubuntu, The Hood, Vuka, Isiseko. They trained through Dare2Dream for free. They lived in Zip Zap's residence to stay focused on their goals. They were supported every step of the way by donors who believed in them.

The performers of MOYA aren't just talented artists – they are living testaments to Zip Zap's life-changing impact.
Take Jacobus "Trompie" Claasen. He lived on the streets as a child before finding Zip Zap in 2009. Today, he plays the lead role in MOYA – a character based on his own life story. He has performed at the White House for President Obama and for tennis legend Roger Federer.
Or Masizakhe Kovi, who joined Zip Zap at age 13 as a "tiny, shy kid." He discovered his natural flexibility and has become a breathtaking hand-balancing artist. He graduated from Zip Zap's Dare2Dream vocational program in 2020 and now tours the world as a professional performer.
Or Phelelani Ndakrokra, who says: "I'm living my big dream. To get to travel the world, share my story through my art, and then get to come home and teach the next generation is what I want to do with my life".
These are the stars MOYA has launched – and their stories are only beginning.

Why does MOYA matter?
For 33 years, Zip Zap has been transforming lives through social circus – giving vulnerable youth a safe space to play, learn, and grow. But MOYA represents something extraordinary: the bridge from social circus to professional excellence.
"To cross the bridge from a social to professional circus is a big jump and fairly unheard of," says co-founder Brent van Rensburg. MOYA proves it's possible.
The show has received standing ovations and encores for each of its 116 performances on recent tours across Mauritius, the USA, France, and Réunion . It has played at prestigious venues including La Villette in Paris, the New Victory Theater in New York, and the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis .
But perhaps most importantly, MOYA creates sustainable careers for its performers. They earn well while on tour and represent the living proof that Zip Zap's model works – from the streets to the world stage.

This month, we're featuring the crown jewel of Zip Zap Circus: MOYA.
MOYA (which means "spirit" in isiXhosa and isiZulu) is Zip Zap's first-ever professional touring company – and it's a dream decades in the making. What started in 1992 with a trapeze bar in a tree, a costume box, and a rusty car has evolved into a world-class production that has captivated audiences across four continents.
MOYA tells the real-life story of a young boy growing up on the streets of Cape Town who finds his way to the Zip Zap Circus School, where a new beginning unfolds. Inspired by Nelson Mandela's dream of a Rainbow Nation, the show follows his journey from unbelievably rough beginnings to touring the world playing the lead role of his own life story.
The show features a cast of nine elite performers, many of whom have been on this journey from the very beginning. They mix acrobatics with African dance and contemporary circus in a uniquely South African production that tells a universal story of hope, resilience, and belonging.

The impact of The Hood isn't just anecdotal – it's measurable.
In 2024, The Hood engaged 30 children across 30 workshops . These children played, learned, and developed – physically and creatively.
But here's what truly matters:
100% of participants confirmed they enjoyed their time during The Hood workshops
92% felt loved at Zip Zap
88% felt comfortable talking to someone at Zip Zap
54% reported feeling stronger and fitter since joining the program
The program also achieved a 52% female participation rate, with a marked positive change in how participants view gender equality.
Despite the demands of school, family responsibilities, and the challenges of their environments, participants maintained a 69% attendance rate – a powerful testament to their resilience and perseverance.
This is what happens when children feel safe, supported, and seen. They show up. They grow. They shine.
