The performers of MOYA aren't just talented artists – they are living testaments to Zip Zap's life-changing impact.
Take Jacobus "Trompie" Claasen. He lived on the streets as a child before finding Zip Zap in 2009. Today, he plays the lead role in MOYA – a character based on his own life story. He has performed at the White House for President Obama and for tennis legend Roger Federer.
Or Masizakhe Kovi, who joined Zip Zap at age 13 as a "tiny, shy kid." He discovered his natural flexibility and has become a breathtaking hand-balancing artist. He graduated from Zip Zap's Dare2Dream vocational program in 2020 and now tours the world as a professional performer.
Or Phelelani Ndakrokra, who says: "I'm living my big dream. To get to travel the world, share my story through my art, and then get to come home and teach the next generation is what I want to do with my life".
These are the stars MOYA has launched – and their stories are only beginning.

Why does MOYA matter?
For 33 years, Zip Zap has been transforming lives through social circus – giving vulnerable youth a safe space to play, learn, and grow. But MOYA represents something extraordinary: the bridge from social circus to professional excellence.
"To cross the bridge from a social to professional circus is a big jump and fairly unheard of," says co-founder Brent van Rensburg. MOYA proves it's possible.
The show has received standing ovations and encores for each of its 116 performances on recent tours across Mauritius, the USA, France, and Réunion . It has played at prestigious venues including La Villette in Paris, the New Victory Theater in New York, and the Children's Theatre Company in Minneapolis .
But perhaps most importantly, MOYA creates sustainable careers for its performers. They earn well while on tour and represent the living proof that Zip Zap's model works – from the streets to the world stage.

This month, we're featuring the crown jewel of Zip Zap Circus: MOYA.
MOYA (which means "spirit" in isiXhosa and isiZulu) is Zip Zap's first-ever professional touring company – and it's a dream decades in the making. What started in 1992 with a trapeze bar in a tree, a costume box, and a rusty car has evolved into a world-class production that has captivated audiences across four continents.
MOYA tells the real-life story of a young boy growing up on the streets of Cape Town who finds his way to the Zip Zap Circus School, where a new beginning unfolds. Inspired by Nelson Mandela's dream of a Rainbow Nation, the show follows his journey from unbelievably rough beginnings to touring the world playing the lead role of his own life story.
The show features a cast of nine elite performers, many of whom have been on this journey from the very beginning. They mix acrobatics with African dance and contemporary circus in a uniquely South African production that tells a universal story of hope, resilience, and belonging.

The impact of The Hood isn't just anecdotal – it's measurable.
In 2024, The Hood engaged 30 children across 30 workshops . These children played, learned, and developed – physically and creatively.
But here's what truly matters:
100% of participants confirmed they enjoyed their time during The Hood workshops
92% felt loved at Zip Zap
88% felt comfortable talking to someone at Zip Zap
54% reported feeling stronger and fitter since joining the program
The program also achieved a 52% female participation rate, with a marked positive change in how participants view gender equality.
Despite the demands of school, family responsibilities, and the challenges of their environments, participants maintained a 69% attendance rate – a powerful testament to their resilience and perseverance.
This is what happens when children feel safe, supported, and seen. They show up. They grow. They shine.

So what actually happens in The Hood?
Every week, children ages 6 to 17 gather in their neighborhood for workshops led by dedicated Zip Zap instructors. They rotate through various circus disciplines – juggling, acrobatics, balancing, aerial basics – in a fun, supportive environment.
But here's what makes The Hood special.
The program develops physical skills – strength, coordination, fitness, but it also intentionally builds:
Improved self-esteem – because mastering a hard skill feels incredible
Self-confidence – because performing in front of peers takes courage
Teamwork – because circus doesn't work alone
Positive gender attitudes – with activities designed to create equal views of all genders
At the end of each year, participants showcase their progress at a "Show & Tell" event. Parents watch their children – some of whom were once shy or uncertain – take the stage with confidence, revealing talents no one knew they had.
It's the highlight of the year for everyone.

This month, we're featuring The Hood – one of Zip Zap's most beloved outreach programs in Cape Town, South Africa.
The Hood does something unique: instead of children traveling across the city to reach Zip Zap, Zip Zap comes to them. This neighborhood-based program engages children ages 6 to 17 right in their own community, at the Zip Zap Academy located on their doorsteps.
Every week, these young people gather to learn various circus disciplines in a safe, novel, and fun environment. They juggle, balance, tumble, and fly – but they also do something just as important.
They meet other children from the neighborhood. They forge new friendships. They create a sense of kinship and belonging.
