Today, we celebrate the ideals of freedom, democracy, and opportunity while recognizing that the work of building a more perfect union continues.

As Justice Thurgood Marshall (Howard University School of Law, Class of 1933) reminded us:

“It’s a democracy if we can keep it. And in order to keep it, you can’t stand still. You must move, and if you don’t move, they will run over you.”

Those words continue to challenge us to lead with courage, advocate for justice, and remain engaged in our communities.

This Independence Day, may we honor not only our nation’s history, but also those who have worked—and continue to work—to ensure that the promise of liberty extends to all.
