In 2023, the WHO declared Mali as being the 17th country to eliminate as a public health problem.
Trachoma is the first NTD to be eliminated in Mali. Across the other 10 West African nations supported by Act | West, more than 84 million people are no longer at risk for trachoma.

This year, the countries supported by Act to End NTDs l West were able to achieve important progress against .
For example, in 2024, Sierra Leone’s Ministry of Health signed their sustainability plan, completing its validation process.

Thanks to USAID - US Agency for International Development support through the Act to End NTDs l West program, over 152 million people living in the countries supported by Act | West are no longer at risk for lymphatic filariasis!
In addition, 386 districts across Mali, Sierra Leone, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, and Niger once faced . Today, only 3 districts remain—all in Burkina Faso.
A testament to decades of collaboration and resilience.

For the past 10 years, Rebecca Lebbie, who is a nurse in Sierra Leone, has been on a mission to control the schistosomiasis in her native Kono district.
Benin, like other countries supported by USAID’s Act to End NTDs | West project, relies on drugs that are imported into the country and are subject to customs and clearance upon arrival in the country. What makes Benin’s experience unique is the process used to expedite the drug clearance.

USAID’s Act to End NTDs | West program supports the elimination of seven neglected tropical diseases (NTD) in Benin, Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Ghana, Guinea, Côte d’Ivoire, Mali, Niger, Senegal, Sierra Leone and Togo. The program seeks to build upon the achievements of USAID’s END in Africa and ENVISION projects in West Africa, continuing efforts to eliminate lymphatic filariasis, trachoma, and (in selected countries) onchocerciasis as public health problems. It also aims to strengthen national NTD program capacity to sustain treatment for long-term control of schistosomiasis, onchocerciasis, and three types of soil-transmitted helminthiasis (caused by hookworms, roundworms and whipworms), and to mainstream NTD programs into national health systems.
The FHI 360-Led Act to End NTDs | West Team
FHI 360 leads USAID’s Act to End NTDs | West program and financial management and provides management oversight with expertise in NTD capacity building; WASH; malaria; social and behavior change; gender; the collaborating, learning, and adapting process; health systems strengthening (HSS); and monitoring, evaluation and learning. In addition to leading the project, FHI 360 implements Act to End NTDs | West activities in Benin, Côte d’Ivoire, Ghana, and Senegal.
Helen Keller International (HKI) supports NTD capacity building and integration with nutrition, school-based and child health interventions. HKI is the implementing partner in Burkina Faso, Cameroon, Guinea, Mali, Niger, and Sierra Leone.
Health and Development International’s (HDI) collaboration with Togo’s MOH led to Togo becoming the first African country to eliminate LF as a public health problem. HDI is the implementing partner in Togo.
Cross-Cutting Partners
Deloitte supports HSS and sustainability activities for Act to End NTDs | West, assisting national health and finance ministries in NTDP planning, costing, supply chain management, innovative financing, and resource mobilization. World Vision supports cross-sectoral coordination with WASH, malaria, nutrition, and school-based programming and leverage its WASH programming and private and other funders in Ghana, Mali, Niger, Senegal, and Sierra Leone. Americares provides warehouse management support and secure drug donations to treat secondary effects of MDA and reduce NTD morbidity. AIM Initiative assists with assessing the morbidity burden and provide management strategies for dossier development.
