August is National Make-A-Will Month, a reminder of the importance of planning for the future and ensuring our wishes are clearly documented.

The Mission for Mark Initiative, led by our grantee Southeast Louisiana Legal Services - SLLS, was recently profiled for its work helping cancer patients prepare their wills.

“It’s an incredible opportunity,” says Dianne Bourgeois with Baton Rouge General Medical Center. “Because usually cancer patients are so busy receiving treatment, going through the stress of a health condition and changes in their family, that one of the last things they’re thinking about is [their will].”

"I have seen firsthand how legal aid can change the direction of someone’s life, because it changed mine."

Before Colleen Murphy was a member of the Legal Aid Society Of San Diego, Inc.'s board of directors, she was a new parent struggling to make ends meet.

Everyone deserves a fair chance to move forward.

Leaders from across Kentucky gathered in Louisville this week for LSC's forum on expanding access to justice. Attorneys, clients and business leaders discussed how second-chance employment initiatives and access to legal help can create opportunities for Kentuckians. These efforts support recovery, expand economic opportunity, strengthen communities and connect employers with a broader talent pool.

A big thanks to Legal Aid of the Bluegrass, Kentucky Legal Aid, AppalReD Legal Aid and Legal Aid Society for helping make this event possible.
