We are proud to spotlight Lo van Pham, a historic trailblazer who shattered glass ceilings as the first Asian American game official in NFL history. 🏈🇺🇸✨

Lo’s journey from Southeast Asian refugee camps to the elite ranks of football’s highest level—joining a legacy of over 1,300 officials across league history—is a testament to pure grit, resilience, and extraordinary dedication. 🗽🏆

Key Milestones & Impact:
• An Incredible Refugee Journey: Born in Pakse, Laos, Lo lived with his family in multiple refugee camps across Laos, Thailand, and the Philippines for three years before emigrating to the United States in 1979 and settling in Amarillo, Texas. 🇹🇭🇱🇦🇵🇭🇺🇸

• A Elite College Officiating Record: Before being hired into the NFL in 2022 as part of an elite incoming class of ten officials, Lo spent 7 seasons as a standout official in the Big 12 Conference, earning assignments to prestigious New Year’s Six matchups including the Fiesta Bowl, Peach Bowl, and Sugar Bowl. 🍧🍑

• Developmental League Anchor: Lo has been a fixture at the intersection of football innovation, working as a field judge across multiple developmental leagues, including the AAF, XFL, and officiating the USFL Championship Game in Canton, Ohio. 🏆🏟️

• Distinguished Dual-Career Professional: Off the gridiron, Lo balances his elite athletic career as a highly accomplished civil structural engineer and project manager in Texas, where he lives with his wife and two sons. 📐👷‍♂️

Lo van Pham’s historic presence on the field serves as a powerful reminder of how the American dream, combined with specialized expertise, can redefine representation in professional sports. 🌏💪

We are proud to spotlight Mayor Helen Tran, the 35th Mayor of San Bernardino, California, and a historic trailblazer in American governance. 🇺🇸✨
Born to Vietnamese refugees who came to the U.S. in search of the American Dream, Mayor Tran shattered systemic glass ceilings by winning her election with a resounding 62% of the vote. In doing so, she made history as San Bernardino’s first Asian American mayor, the city's third female mayor, and the first Vietnamese American woman ever elected mayor of any American city. 🇻🇳🦅

Key Milestones & Impact:
• Deep Grassroots & Municipal Roots: Raised in San Bernardino since the age of six, Helen did not speak English when she started elementary school. Her childhood was shaped by hard work, including helping her mother sew clothes for department stores. She later rose through the ranks at San Bernardino City Hall, starting as a temporary executive assistant and eventually becoming the city's youngest-ever Director of Human Resources. 💼 leadership

• First-Generation Champion: A proud graduate of Cajon High School and UC Santa Cruz, Helen overcame immense hurdles to become the first person in her family to earn a college degree—a milestone heavily guided by local community mentors. 🎓❤️

• A Resilient Mandate: Stepping into office on December 21, 2022, Mayor Tran brought a historic victory to the Inland Empire, charting a new era focused on community reciprocity, youth program expansion, economic investment, and infrastructural revitalization. 🏛️🗽

• Defending Balanced Governance: Standing firm for institutional balance at City Hall, she successfully exercised her mayoral at-large veto to defeat a charter amendment that would have eliminated her position, protecting the voting power of the constituents who elected her. ⚖️📜

• Dedicated Civic Leader & Mother: Balancing her executive role as a mother, her long record of local service includes leadership on the Parks and Recreation Commission, the Bob Holcomb Elementary School Site Council, the League of Women Voters, and the Rotary Club. 🏡🇺🇸

Mayor Tran's leadership is a powerful reminder of how lived experience, deep institutional knowledge, and cultural pride come together to shape vibrant, inclusive, and forward-looking communities. 🌏💪

History made in Garland! 🏛️✨ Jimmy Tran has officially been sworn in as the first-ever Vietnamese American and Asian American elected to the Garland City Council, representing District 1.

Reflecting on his journey—from arriving in the U.S. as a refugee in 1994 to working as a software engineer and community volunteer—Council Member Tran calls this honor a responsibility to “pay it forward.” His focus for the term is clear: prioritizing public safety, strengthening neighborhoods, and ensuring transparency in government.

As the city continues to celebrate AAPI Heritage Month, this milestone highlights the power of representation. “This moment is not just about me,” Tran shared. “It is also about showing more residents that their voices matter and that they can be part of local government.”
Congratulations to Council Member Tran on this historic achievement for Garland! 🇻🇳🇺🇸
