Campaign Legal Center is a nonpartisan nonprofit advancing democracy through law, focused on voting rights, fair maps and redistricting, campaign finance, government ethics and the rule of law. We fight for every American’s freedom to vote and participate meaningfully in the democratic process, particularly Americans who have faced political barriers because of race, ethnicity or economic status. A felony conviction does not necessarily mean you’ve lost your right to vote.

Of the nearly 24 million Americans with past felony convictions, more than 19 million can register to vote right now, but many may not know it. This is due to a patchwork of confusing and evolving laws, rampant misinformation and intimidation tactics that keep Americans from exercising their freedom to vote.

That’s why Campaign Legal Center’s Restore Your Vote program has launched a new interactive, color-coded map to illustrate the complicated nationwide collection of felony disenfranchisement laws. The tool, which will be regularly updated as laws change, also can help policymakers understand if disparities exist in their state that should be remedied by legislation.

VICTORY: We secured a court order permanently blocking an illegal Trump administration rule that prevented nonpartisan civic engagement groups such as our client, the League of Women Voters, from registering new U.S. citizens to vote at administrative naturalization ceremonies.

Over the past few decades, the League has registered hundreds of thousands of new U.S. citizens to vote after naturalization ceremonies nationwide. In 2024 alone, the League registered more than 15% of all new American citizens to vote at naturalization ceremonies.

With this court victory, the League can continue educating and registering new citizens at these ceremonies — a long-standing tradition that encourages political participation.
