Alhamdulillah. After nearly a year of work on the Sayeda Zainab Initiative, we can say today that ziyarat to Bibi Sayyida Zaynab (a.s.) has reopened.

This morning more than 70 ziyarat group operators from the United States, Canada, Europe, India and Pakistan joined us on a call together. They left it with the contacts, the approvals process, and the information they need to start bringing their own groups. That was the entire point of the last twelve months.

When we began this work, the shrine was in one of the most vulnerable positions it has been in. Nobody could say with any confidence when pilgrims would return. What we could do was advocate, and keep the shrine in front of people who had the ability to protect it, and so that is what we did, through a global campaign carried by momineen in every part of the world.

Along the way we led one of the first international ziyarat delegations to Damascus after the change in government, and held azadari at the haram. We sat with Syrian ministries and prepared a Ziyarat Guidelines document, so that groups arriving now do so with proper care for a community that has just come through a war.

And today we handed it over. Operators are connected directly to the people they need. They do not need to come through UMAA to organize a trip, and they should not have to. That was always the goal. Reopen the door, then get out of the way.

There is more ahead, and we will have more to share soon. But today belongs to everyone who signed, shared, donated and made du’a for this over the past year. It is your work as much as ours. Our thanks also to the shrine administration, to our partners in Damascus, and to the officials who met us with real seriousness and generosity.
