Sally Ride, PhD, was the first American woman in space.

An avid tennis player, Ride considered becoming a professional player but ultimately decided to become an astrophysicist, and received her doctorate in physics from Stanford University.

Ride saw an article about NASA looking to recruit women as astronauts, applied, and became part of the 1978 astronaut class, the first to include women.

On June 18, 1983, she became the first American woman in space, the third woman overall, and the youngest American in space at that time.

Cara Harlan is a mother of 3, a biomedical researcher, and proof that caregiving and a STEM career can coexist — with the right support. The AWIS Caregiver Advancement Scholarship is helping her cover summer camp costs and transportation support for family caregivers this summer so she can focus on her NSF research internship and her path to becoming a physician-scientist.
