Naming Misogynoir: Gender, Power and Patriarchy in the Black Church

05/01/2026

This week, the Supreme Court struck down Louisiana’s second majority-Black congressional district in Louisiana v. Callais, narrowing one of the key tools communities have used to challenge racially discriminatory voting maps.

For decades, Section 2 of the Voting Rights Act has helped communities challenge voting maps that dilute the political power of Black voters and other voters of color. In Louisiana, Black voters make up roughly one-third of the state’s population, but the map at the center of this case would have protected only one majority-Black congressional district. After years of litigation, Louisiana adopted a map with a second majority-Black district. The Supreme Court has now struck that map down.

This matters because voting rights are not only about whether someone can cast a ballot. They are also about whether communities have a meaningful opportunity to be represented.

The NAACP has called this decision a voting rights crisis. Voting rights advocates are warning that it opens the door for more racially discriminatory maps, especially when racial discrimination is hidden behind claims of partisan mapmaking.

For people of faith, this is a moral issue. Democracy is not only a system of government; it is a commitment to the dignity, voice, and agency of our neighbors. When communities are silenced, when representation is diluted, when hard-won protections are weakened, we are called to pay attention and respond.
