Next week, our Director, Innovation Maxime Belingheri will be joining EMBRACE - Empowering Business Communities to Prevent Labour Trafficking for their Best Practice Sharing Conference, organized by HEUNI / The European Institute for Crime Prevention and Control.

Weโ€™re looking forward to being a part of this important two-day conference focused on preventing labor trafficking and strengthening cross-border cooperation.

During his remarks, Maxime will be sharing concrete cases โ€” such as Harvesting the Future - where FLAโ€™s multi-stakeholder approach has led to a significant and measurable impact in addressing systemic issues such as child labor and forced labor.

Eliminating child labor requires more than prohibition.

It requires systems that protect children, support families, improve working conditions, and enable responsible business practices across supply chains.

Ahead of the World Day Against Child Labor this Friday, our Executive Vice President and Chief Innovation Officer Richa Mittal reflected on the benefits of models like our award-winning initiative when tackling challenges like child labor. Read her article at the link in comments ๐Ÿ”—

Last week, our Vice President, Innovation Burcu Kugu participated in the Organic Cotton Summit in Istanbul. Over the course of two days, she had the chance to connect with many of our partners and stakeholders to talk about some of the most pressing issues in sustainability.

One major theme throughout the event was the need to connect material choicesโ€”such as organic cotton or recycled fiberโ€”with meaningful human rights due diligence. Material choices alone arenโ€™t enough to address sustainability risks.

A few other key takeaways from the Summit that weโ€™re thinking about:
๐ŸŸข Certification and traceability are important tools, but they are not substitutes for human rights due diligence.
๐ŸŸข Circularity begins not only with what products are made from, but also with how those materials are produced and how people are treated throughout the supply chain.
๐ŸŸข "Renewable" does not automatically mean "sustainable."
๐ŸŸข Sustainable agriculture requires investment in both environmental and social outcomes.

As the textile sector moves toward greater sustainability and circularity, the real measure of success will not be how effectively we identify risks, but how effectively we work together to address them.

When we apply due diligence expectations to farms, we need to be practical. One of the key lessons from our work is that child labor, unsafe working conditions, and recruitment risks are rarely isolated farm-level issues. They are often symptoms of broader challenges such as poverty, migration, informal labor systems, and limited access to education and social services.

Addressing these risks requires more than compliance. It requires collaboration, remediation, and long-term engagement with farming communities. At the Fair Labor Association, we see this firsthand through our Harvesting the Future (HTF) โ€” Cotton in India program.

Some exciting news: Weโ€™re launching a Collegiate Retailer Program pilot this summer ๐Ÿซ๐Ÿงข

For more than 25 years, colleges and universities have joined our University Caucus to demonstrate their commitment to ethical sourcing and fair labor standards throughout the supply chains of licensed products. Now, we're exploring meaningful engagement with the retailers sourcing and selling those collegiate licensed products.

The program will focus on building capacity for HRDD and responsible business conduct within retailersโ€™ business operations and supply chains.

We're excited to have Barnes and Noble College, Cactus Sports, Follett Higher Education Group, Grand Canyon University Lope Shop, Lids U, The Pitt Shop & University Store on Fifth, The Cornell Store, and University Co-op participating as we pilot this program.

Over the past two years, weโ€™ve been conducting research on recent guidance, reports, analyses, standards, and legislation related to the gender pay gap, gender equity in the workplace, and gender equity in supply chains as part of our Gender Workplan.

The culmination of this work is our new research guide that supports companies in improving on gender issues.

As legal sustainability and accountability requirements increase globally, companies must incorporate a gender perspective into their operations and risk analysis.

Our guide gives sustainability professionals the necessary background to integrate a gender lens into their human rights due diligence programs. Download it at fairlabor.org ๐Ÿ“ฅ https://www.fairlabor.org/resource/research-guide-gender-equity-for-companies/

๐Ÿ’ฌ What does โ€œgoodโ€ stakeholder engagement actually look like?

Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement isnโ€™t about one-off consultations. When it is done well, it should be:
๐ŸŸข Early and continuous
๐ŸŸข Rights-based and well-informed
๐ŸŸข Safe and accessible
๐ŸŸข Inclusive and legitimate

But we know that many companies struggle to know where to start, who to reach and how to engage in a meaningful and constructive way.

We recently launched a new guidance for the agriculture and food manufacturing sector that unpacks these principles in practice. Developed with Oxfam, AIM-Progress, amfori, Ethical Trading Initiative, Etisk Handel Sverige, and Food Network for Ethical Trade and aligned with best practice, this guidance includes practical tools, checklists and case studies from companies.

As companies start to explore or strengthen Meaningful Stakeholder Engagement, this guidance makes clear that engagement must put rightsholders such as workers and communities at the centre.

Below is a sneak peek of the first few pages โ€” download the full guidance to explore how engagement can strengthen both due diligence and outcomes on the ground ๐Ÿ‘‰ https://policy-practice.oxfam.org/resources/policy-practice-oxfam-org-resources-meaningful-stakeholder-engagement-practical-guidance-for-companies-in-the-agric-621800/

Companies traditionally have focused their due diligence efforts on Tier One suppliers. However, what we have observed over the years is that many human rights issues are in the opaque parts of the supply chain.

As Richa Mittal explained during a recent webinar we hosted with Tearfund, when you move upstream in supply chains, these issues become more systemic.

So what can companies do? The Human Rights and Environmental Due Diligence (HREDD) self-assessment approach offers a path to drive positive change. FLA and Tearfund's tools help businesses systematically identify, manage, prevent and reduce human rights and environmental risks across their operations and supply chains.

As Richa points out in this clip, companies donโ€™t take quality for granted. Quality is embedded in the product. We want to see human rights and labor standards embedded in the product as well.

The full webinar is now available on our YouTube channel ๐ŸŽฅ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S_gDbQzvTRw
