Washington Douglass Chorale

Washington Douglass Chorale Voices as diverse, dynamic, and resilient as our city. Blending Black spirituals & choral traditions with D.C. soul.

Co-Artistic Directors: Theodore Thorpe, III & Scott Tucker Founded as a collaborative effort by DC luminaries, Scott Tucker and Nolan Williams, Jr, the Washington Douglass Chorale was formed through a shared vision to create a mixed chorus emphasizing extreme diversity and embracing the full spectrum of choral works. The chorus, an 80-voice ensemble, is made up of volunteer and professional singer

s that authentically reflect the racial diversity and ethnicity of the Washington, DC region, and will collaborate with major symphonies and participate in premiere events both in Washington, DC and beyond.

A model rarely seen in choral music.
Two co-artistic directors. Leading together in partnership. Two perspectives shaping every programming decision. Two sets of references in every rehearsal.
It's why WDC sounds the way it does. And it's one of the three things your gift directly supports.

10 days remain in our fiscal year.

Give before June 30. Link in bio.

This Juneteenth, the Washington Douglass Chorale joins the nation in reflecting on freedom, resilience, and the ongoing journey toward equality. As a community of diverse voices, we believe in the power of music to honor history and unite souls.

Looking back, one of our most meaningful milestones was last year's collaboration with NOW for the Juneteenth concert, Ode to Freedom, Ode to Joy (Beethoven’s 9th Symphony). Together, we lifted our voices to celebrate liberty and unity, creating a moment that still resonates with us today.

As we mark this historic day, we reaffirm our commitment to amplifying diverse stories and neglected masterworks, ensuring every voice in our community belongs and is heard.

Happy Juneteenth! ✨

When you give to the Washington Douglass Chorale, your gift goes directly to three things:

Professional musicians whose artistry enriches our programming caliber. Continued investment in our co-artistic director model. And programming that honors the full spectrum of choral tradition.

Gifts of every size matter. Every gift makes a difference.

The founders of WDC didn't set out to start one more choir. There were already plenty of choirs in DC.

They set out to build something that didn't exist and three seasons in, it now does.

Help us close this season well. The next one begins with what we raise now.

Give before June 30. Link in bio.

The Washington Douglass Chorale exists because two singers couldn't find the chorale they wanted to sing in. So they built it.

We just closed our third season. The fourth begins with what we raise now.

Meet David Flaxman and Rob Vogel. They founded the Washington Douglass Chorale.
"We started the Washington Douglass Chorale because the chorale we wanted to sing in did not exist. We have spent years in DC's choral community as volunteer chorus members, sitting in the sections, learning the repertoire, showing up to rehearsals on weeknights for the love of the music."

Their story is why WDC exists. We'll be sharing more of it this week.

Help us close our third season. Give by June 30. Link in bio.

On May 17, the room reflected the city.

DC is called the choral capital of the world. And yet, until WDC, no chorale here reflected the full breadth of the city it claims to serve. American Tapestry was what we were built to make possible — and our third season was where we proved it could be sustained.
Our fiscal year closes June 30. Help us build the fourth season with the same rigor that built the first three.

Give before June 30.
