Frontline health workers are more risk for reporting having a positive Covid-19 test since every day they are exposed to working patients who have Covid-19. However, there are little factors in protecting healthcare workers. The lack of PPEs and masks plays a big role in increasing the risk of being exposed to Covid-19. In general, the best practice for the general public is to wear a mask, wash hands properly, and practice social distancing. We want to thank all frontline workers and frontline health workers for all they do.

The fight continues on for PPEs as the pandemic continues to surge in the US. For educators, they are worried about receiving adequate equipment when the start of the new school year is just around the corner for many. For healthcare workers, the need for PPEs increases as the pandemic continues on forcing many to adapt by resuing gowns and reusing N95s.

Wearing a mask should be a simple task but for a Black man in America, wearing a mask brings many fears and anxieties such as some people in our society might view a masked Black man suspiciously. COVID-19 serves as a reminder of the rooted structural racism in our communities. However, one psychiatrist states that even if the mask does little to protect him from the racism, he will continue to wear a mask to limit the spread of the virus. So everyone should do their part regardless of their background affiliation whether they are black, brown, or white, or whether they are Asian or Latinx, wear a mask to limit the transmission of COVID-19.

As the pandemic continues, the demand for PPEs is becoming an increasing problem. The demand is not only coming from the hospitals that are treating COVID-19 patients, but also from nursing homes and primary care doctors as they begin welcoming back patients for routine primary care, and other frontline workers. In addition, N95 masks are still unavailable and were not included in the FEMA shipments. In order to fix these problems, "the 'Public Interest Research Group is Medical Supply' Transparency and Delivery Act that would boost domestic PPE production and establish a central coordinator position within the government that would oversee federal purchasing and distribution of medical supplies and have the authority to use the defense production act to produce more equipment." If you know any organizations that need masks, please check out our website at www.actaskforce.com for more information.

Today, we will focus on frontliners or frontline workers. Frontline workers are defined as "employees within essential industries who must physically show up to their jobs" and are a "subset of workers in specific frontline occupations who face a variety of health risks in their workplaces." It is imperative for policymakers to support the frontline workers in terms of the individuals and the work they are doing. The support comes in different forms and this could be through mandated paid sick leave as well as authorize public funding for PPE for disadvantaged businesses and to set related federal requirements for other businesses. The support and guidance (such as establishing and enforcing standards) from federal and community organizations can protect frontliners while ensuring workplaces will remain safe.

For those who don't know what PPE is, Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) is specialized equipment and clothing that an employee wears to minimize exposure to hazards that cause serious workplace injuries and illnesses (like COVID-19). As COVID-19 cases surge nationwide, getting enough PPE has re-emerged as a challenge for many medical providers as well as employers who have the potentiality of being exposed to the virus. "The nation’s top emergency official told lawmakers that the U.S. could face PPE shortages in areas with rising COVID-19 cases, and said the reliance on overseas suppliers is a “national security issue."
For health workers and educators, this protective gear is vital in preventing and mitigating the transmission of COVID-19 from one person to another.

Masks are very important to wear properly because it prevents the spread of the virus. When we cough or sneeze, larger airborne droplets containing virus can travel, usually up to about six feet. Now, we also know that smaller particles can be emitted simply by talking or singing, and can go much farther, and often linger in the air for hours. However, wearing a mask properly (covering both mouth and nose) mitigates the risk of the spread of those air droplets especially when you are in public spaces (grocery stores, shops, restaurants, etc.). When possible, keeping about 6 feet of distance between yourself and others is key. It’s also important to practice other preventative measures such as washing hands, avoiding touching your face, coughing into your elbow, and staying home if you feel sick.
