“I get up every day because I know there's going to be a woman that needs me,” Kimberly Harris said during the White House Conference on Hunger, Nutrition, and Health.

In 2020, Kimberly founded Women’s HQ, a Washington, D.C.-based nonprofit that uplifts women of color who have experienced domestic violence and sexual assault. Through counseling, wellness programs, and career opportunities, Women’s HQ helps women reclaim their lives.

This mission “will always be embedded in my heart because I am a domestic violence survivor,” she said. “I speak from experience. I was that girl that was sitting in room with thinking there was no way out of my trauma or a clear pathway to my future.”

As she reclaimed her life, she knew she wanted to help other women, but first, she needed education, she said. She received a Bachelors degree in Arts in Management with 4.0 grades at The Catholic University of America, and then she enrolled at Georgetown University where she achieved her MBA Executive Masters in Leadership.

Through Womens HQ, Kimberly wanted to create an atmosphere for women to “overcome their circumstances and regain themselves through health and wellness,” she said.

“It’s the holistic approach,” she said. Women receive wrap-around support that helps them build their future, including by establishing a sustainable career path.

“I'm not talking about just flipping burgers. I'm talking about a workable wage. You can actually get benefits from your employer and you can actually hold down your household and save a little money,” Kimberly said. The goal is “to see your future and see your way through the trauma.”

Kimberly attended the White House conference because she wanted to advocate for more resources for nonprofits like Women’s HQ. “We're the boots on the ground,” by helping survivors reclaim their lives from “trauma to triumph.”

RE: Passing of Kyle Busch

It is with profound reverence that I extend my heartfelt prayers and condolences to the family, friends and community on the passing of the remarkable Kyle Busch.

I was blessed to have witnessed and met Kyle and his wife Samantha at a NASCAR event years ago, and he was a shining example of kindness and compassion with a heart of gold.

Kyle was a beacon of inspiration for me, and his passion for NASCAR racing ignited a fire within me, and he undoubtedly helped many of us understand why the sport has maintained its devoted fan base for decades.

Kyle, your legacy will continue to uplift and inspire us, and we will forever cherish the memories of your time on the track, and we will continue to celebrate the incredible impact you had on the sport you loved.

RE: Ex-Ohio State football players to join sexual abuse lawsuit against school.

Thirty former Ohio State football players, including some former NFL players, have agreed to join a federal lawsuit against the university over the sexual abuse of student-athletes decades ago by a team doctor, according to a lawyer in the case.

The lawyer, Rocky Ratliff, stated in an interview that the men came forward some eight years after the first lawsuit was filed because they needed to overcome the shame of revealing that they had been sexually abused by another man and the fear of taking on the university publicly.

They are "tearful and living with it," Ratliff said. "But as this case progresses, they see how Ohio State is treating athletes from the university, and I think they want people to know it's OK, even if it is male to male [sexual abuse], to come forward."

Ohio State has fought lawsuits in federal court since 2018 brought by former student-athletes against the university over its failure to stop abuse by Dr. Richard Strauss. Hundreds say they were abused by Strauss, who worked at the school from 1978 to 1998. He died in 2005.

The men have signed letters of agreement to join a lawsuit filed by other student-athletes who say they are victims of Strauss, according to Ratliff.

Of the 30, only three have agreed to make their identities public, Ratliff said. They are Al Washington, Ray Ellis, and Keith Ferguson, he said. All were members of the 1980 Rose Bowl team and were recruited by and played for legendary coach Woody Hayes.

Some other former football players have settled with the school in sealed agreements that kept their names a secret, according to Ratliff.

In a statement, Ohio State said it has "sincerely and persistently tried to reconcile with survivors, including former football student-athletes, through monetary and non-monetary means, including settlements, counseling services, and other medical treatment."

As of April 15, the university has settled with 317 survivors for more than $61 million and remains actively engaged in mediation, the school said.

In an interview, Washington said it was hard to talk about the abuse he suffered and recalled being subjected to "unlawful" physical exams by Strauss when he was 18 or 19. He and the other players tried to make light of it with each other and joke about it.

"But it was really uncomfortable," said Washington, now 67.

He didn't discuss it with others over the decades, but watching the 2025 documentary film "Surviving Ohio State" put it back into his thoughts.

"As a matter of fact, I couldn't make it through that movie," Washington said. "The pain and anguish that I saw, I just couldn't take it."

Strauss was on the faculty and medical staff at Ohio State. He retired in 1998 with emeritus status. School trustees revoked that mark of honor three years ago.

Washington was drafted in 1981 by the New York Jets and played one season for the team. Ellis, a former defensive back, had a seven-year NFL career from 1981 to 1987, playing with the Philadelphia Eagles and Cleveland Browns. Ferguson, a former defensive end, played in the NFL from 1981 to 1990, including stints with the San Diego Chargers and the Detroit Lions.

For all the survivors of these horrific acts Women’s HQ wishes you successful healing during your quest for justice.

I had the privilege of hosting a round-table discussion yesterday at a Women’s domestic violence shelter, where we explored the profound impact of others' judgments on one's healing journey. This conversation was a powerful awakening for me, offering valuable insights into our work at Women's HQ and inspiring me to reflect on how we can better support survivors.

Recognizing that judging others' healing processes often stems from unaddressed personal insecurities, projections, or a desire for control, I am reminded that true growth begins with self-awareness. By acknowledging the uniqueness of each individual's journey, we can shift our focus from judgment to self-compassion, cultivating a more supportive and inclusive community.

The Mirror Effect is a powerful reminder that our judgments often reflect our own unmet healing needs. When we pause to reflect on our reactions, we can gain a deeper understanding of our own fears and insecurities, and redirect our energy towards personal growth and healing.

By embracing empathy and compassion, we can create a safe and supportive environment for survivors to thrive. Letting go of the need to control or judge, we can focus on our own healing journeys, and collectively rise towards a brighter, more compassionate future.

As we strive for positive change, I am reminded that every small step towards self-awareness, empathy, and compassion has the power to transform lives. By working together, we can create a world where every individual can heal, grow, and thrive.

As we approach Mother’s Day, I am deeply inspired to pay heartfelt tribute to those extraordinary women who have been blessed with the profound gift of providing unwavering love, care, and devotion. While motherhood encompasses the divine task of providing unconditional love, care, and support, it also involves navigating life's complexities, challenges, and exhaustion, yet it is widely celebrated as a profound privilege and a sacred, rewarding journey that profoundly transforms lives and uplifts spirits.

This life-affirming responsibility shapes both the child and the mother, offering daily moments of laughter, affection, and joy that bring immense fulfillment, a deep sense of purpose, and unparalleled satisfaction. Motherhood provides the opportunity to be a safe haven, a guiding light, a teacher, and a child’s greatest supporter, fostering patience, strength, resilience, and a profound appreciation for life’s precious moments and milestones.

As mothers raise kind, thoughtful, and compassionate children, they shape the future, leave an indelible mark on the world, and create a lasting legacy of love. It is truly a transcendent experience to be celebrated on this special day, but as we know, we’re mothers every day.

I pray each of you enjoys this experience, for it is a precious gift to bring life into the world that should never be taken for granted, by a child nor the mother, and always remember that God selected you for this journey, and God never makes mistakes.
