At AIDS 2026 in Rio, advocates made one point clear: communities shouldn’t just have a seat at the table. They should be leading it.

A new blog from AVAC recaps the conference. Highlights include community-led approaches to HIV prevention, early community involvement in research and trial design, and shaping how AI is used in HIV programs.

As Josephine Aseme of the Nigeria Key Populations Health and Rights Network put it: “It is good for stakeholders to understand that communities build trust, and without trust there is no prevention option that is going to have effective impact.”

That aligns with GAPP’s own priorities. The evidence-based investments, transparency, and civil society participation we call on Congress and the Administration to codify depend on communities being at the center. Today marks National HIV/AIDS and Aging Awareness Day. Two decades of investment in treatment and prevention mean people living with HIV are living longer than ever, often managing the virus with a single daily pill.

But longer lives surface new gaps: aging populations with HIV face health system challenges that go beyond viral suppression, and mental health support remains critically underdeveloped in HIV care.

Recognizing this day means recognizing that ending HIV/AIDS isn't just about new infections—it's about supporting the millions already living, and aging, with HIV.
