ach child via email, through direct involvement with their teachers and mentors, thereby ensuring their wellbeing. Through this direct relationship, the children realize that someone, despite the distance, cares for them, is proud of their individual achievements and shares their concerns, fears, goals, dreams. One of the highlights of our commitment with the children is to “remember” and help them celebrate both their birthdays and Christmas by sending them cards and gifts--many of the children had to be assigned birthday dates and approximate ages-- so that now every child feels special by being celebrated with their peers. In addition to the moral and emotional support to our godchildren, we help the IML provide for the educational and material needs for them. The social workers and psychologists working with the IML can attest that having a “godparent” has proven a very positive reinforcement and incentive to the children for both wanting to enter the IML and remaining there.

Our Story

WHO ARE THE GODPARENTS OF THE CHILDREN OF IML? A group of concerned citizens from various international organizations in the Washington Metropolitan area, got together in January 1997 to create the organization “Godparents for the Children of the Instituto Mundo Libre.” (Godparents IML). Our mission is to support the work of the Instituto Mundo Libre of Lima, Peru, a community that shelters kids that live in the streets of Lima after leaving their family homes for different reasons.

In addition to the moral and emotional support to our godchildren, we help the IML provide for the educational and material needs for them. We reach out to IML regularly and ask about projects in need of funding. We then evaluate and agree as a group to help fund some of the projects, considering the funds at hand, and the benefit for the children of the project selected. We try to organize fundraisers at least once a year, and there are also voluntary donations to our group from friends that know about IML work and are williling to contribute to this great cause.
