It means so much to see art continue to have a place in the Columbia Heights community..especially for our youth here at LAYC.
Creating a space where young people can express themselves freely, feel safe, and feel at home is one of our many main goals here📍
Today, we were reminded of the power of community. So many residents showed up and expressed their support, and it truly means everything during this time.
Thank you to the community and a Big thanks To our team here at LAYC

It’s important that art remains here for the Columbia heights community and especially for our youth
We’re creating a space to help them express themselves freely, and making something that feels safe ,& like home, that is our goal!!🥅
Today we gained support from many residents and businesses in the area willing to help us in this important time

Mondays can be a little hectic, but today the youth here at LAYC learned a little something about organizing and how it can help within the community and even their own artworks
with our guest speaker 📚CJ
Followed by an activity with 🪡Ruby
Where the youth were introduced to quilt making and the importance of design using layers and different materials🤗

Fridays are for Field trips 🚌🚍….
And for showing the youth here at LAYC what’s possible. We take them into spaces like museums and galleries so they can see real world examples of how to use spaces for their art. Whether it’s taking pictures of how the artist used the space.. down to the description labels. We want them to be able to know that their art deserves to be seen and experienced how they envisioned it.!

LAYC youth created this mural on Kenyon Street between 11th & 13th Street in 2008. Tubman Elementary school is being rebuilt and the wall was taken down and rebuilt. It is an opportunity to create a new community mural.

Field trip Friday RECAP🗣️
The students in LAYC’s 2nd nature program got the opportunity to visit great examples of exhibitions, instillations, and a workshop this past Friday at the Hirshhorn to gather some inspiration in hopes of creating their own at the end of the summer ☀️
