Thank you to Ann McCallum for being our special guest at the Turner Elementary Author Visit last week! Ann guided us through an interactive adventure of her book “Fantastic Flora”, where we learned about the world’s biggest, baddest, and smelliest plants. 🌾

The students were so excited to make their very own Venus flytraps, complete with googly eyes and insect “snacks” (stickers). We love books that bring science to life in a way that makes learning fun and engaging! 🌿🐞🌼

The National Building Museum is truly such a special place, and we love inviting our families to their events! This past weekend we joined their Big Draw Festival, a full day of playful, hands-on creativity with artists, educators, and cultural partners.

We had a blast seeing everyone participate in the scavenger-style bingo game that we created, featuring fun challenges to deepen engagement with the presenters and activities. Turning the Page families who attended the event also received a book for their home library along with new museum memories to take home. 💫

We are so grateful to for their continued partnership! 💙🏢

Last week, we had the joy of welcoming Tricia Elam Walker to KIPP-Douglass for an author visit! Tricia is the award-winning author of “Dream Street”, named one of the best children’s books of 2021 by The New York Times. Inspired by the story, students got to make their very own “dreams streets” — some complete with orange clouds and purple skies!

Author visits are a key part of our program model, giving families an opportunity to engage with a book on a deeper level by connecting with an author and their story in person. Students often see themselves in the author’s experience, and core memories are created when they get to ask the author questions and take home their very own signed copy of the book. 📖

Research in BMC Psychology found that children’s reading ability is influenced by family factors such as the number of books in the home, age when reading begins, and parent-child reading interactions.

These finding are why we give families books with whatever we do, whether it is a parent workshop, musuem experience, author visit, or 1-1 Mobile Meeting. We know that books are a bridge to success! 📚

KIPP DC-Douglass families: we will see you tomorrow for our event with award-winning author Tricia Elam Walker. Her book “Dream Street”, named one of the best children’s books of 2021 by the New York Times, is a neighborhood story full of joy, hopes, and dreams. After a read aloud by Tricia, students will do an art activity while parents do an author Q&A. It will be a magical night! 🏡

We’re excited to be part of The Big Draw at this Saturday! Spend the day drawing, exploring, and creating at the National Building Museum with live demonstrations, interactive activities, and plenty of inspiration. Free and open to all!

Turning the Page will be doing a Bingo “scavenger hunt” for all attendees to explore event, and we will also be giving our TTP families a book to take home as always 📖

Not only does your child benefit academically from read-alouds with you, but those storytime moments also create memories of bonding, dialogue, and shared learning that will last a lifetime. This applies to students of all ages, especially for our auditory learners. It is never to late to start or to add another night of reading each week! 🫶🏼📚

Our author visit with Amy Hansen was a night for the books (pun intended)! Families at got to learn the story of Wanda Díaz Merced, a Puerto Rican astronomer and trailblazer who, while losing her eyesight, found a way to “hear” the stars by converting data in sound.

After the read aloud, students got to create their very own star mobile to remember the magic of “Wanda Hears the Stars”. We ended the night with pizza, and all families went home with their very own autographed copy of Amy’s book. 💫

We are excited to see our Nalle Elementary families for our author visit with Amy Hansen ! Amy will be doing a read aloud of her book “Wanda Hears the Stars”, a story of astrophysicist Wanda Díaz Merced and how losing her sight didn’t stop her from studying the stars. We will start with a read aloud by Amy, followed by an art activity for kids and an author meet-and-greet/Q&A for parents. See you there! 🌌💫
