We engage D.C. public school parents/guardians as educators through resource-rich programming maximizing family involvement in their children’s learning.

Turning the Page links public schools, families, and our community so that, together, we can ensure students receive valuable educational resources and a high-quality public education. We are confident that with hard work and continued cooperation, we as a community can improve the education of public school students by engaging their parents and families as active and effective participants in their children’s education. We are counting down the days: TTP’s fifth annual Children’s Book and Learning festival is tomorrow!! We can’t wait to see all of our families, authors, and community partners all in one place on the perfect day to promote a love of reading and learning. A full day of fun for the whole family with a giant used book sale for all ages.

We are less than one week away from the biggest day of learning and fun of the year! Register and learn more at turningthepage.org/childrensfestival. We are incredibly grateful and excited to partner with the TCMA, the RRBITC, and Downtown DC on our fifth annual Children’s Book and Learning Festival.

📚 17 booths, 17 places to inspire a love for reading and learn more about building successful family learning journeys

📚6 members of the Children’s Book Guild of Washington, DC (https://www.childrensbookguild.org/), and two independent authors will be participating

📚Community partners including the National Children’s Museum, National Building Museum, Urban Adventure Squad, the giving square, the DC public Library, Step Afrika, Readability, and Shout Mouse Press

📚 Every author/illustrator and community partner will have fun activities or crafts to take home!

📚 Shop thousands of books for $7 or less at the Carpe Librum pop-up until 5 PM

📖📚📚📖 Mark your calendars, our annual Children’s Book and Learning Festival is one month away!! Join Turning the Page, local authors from The Children’s Book Guild of DC, museum partners, and more on Saturday, September 19 at the Ronald Reagan Building and International Trade Center (Woodrow Wilson Plaza). From 10 AM to 5 PM come by with your children for take home arts & crafts and explore thousands of books (for all ages).

Thank you to Ann McCallum for being our special guest at the Turner Elementary Author Visit last week! Ann guided us through an interactive adventure of her book “Fantastic Flora”, where we learned about the world’s biggest, baddest, and smelliest plants. 🌾

The students were so excited to make their very own Venus flytraps, complete with googly eyes and insect “snacks” (stickers). We love books that bring science to life in a way that makes learning fun and engaging! 🌿🐞🌼

Did you know? 💡The Victoria boliviana is the largest known species of waterlily in the world, with the record leaf size of over 10 feet in Bolivia! 🌱 Swipe through to see Ann demonstrate this fun fact to students ➡️

The National Building Museum is truly such a special place, and we love inviting our families to their events! This past weekend we joined their Big Draw Festival, a full day of playful, hands-on creativity with artists, educators, and cultural partners.

We had a blast seeing everyone participate in the scavenger-style bingo game that we created, featuring fun challenges to deepen engagement with the presenters and activities. Turning the Page families who attended the event also received a book for their home library along with new museum memories to take home. 💫

We are so grateful to for their continued partnership! 💙🏢

Last week, we had the joy of welcoming Tricia Elam Walker to KIPP-Douglass for an author visit! Tricia is the award-winning author of “Dream Street”, named one of the best children’s books of 2021 by The New York Times. Inspired by the story, students got to make their very own “dreams streets” — some complete with orange clouds and purple skies!

Author visits are a key part of our program model, giving families an opportunity to engage with a book on a deeper level by connecting with an author and their story in person. Students often see themselves in the author’s experience, and core memories are created when they get to ask the author questions and take home their very own signed copy of the book. 📖

Thank you to all of our authors who make these powerful moments possible! 💫
