The USJC Northern California Region recently visited Yagi Sisters Farm in Sonoma County, where members toured the fields, tasted fresh produce, and learned about the enduring legacy of Japanese American farming in California.
Founded by Reyna Yagi as a tribute to her grandfather and his brothers of Yagi Brothers Farm in Stockton, the farm grows Japanese and Asian vegetable varieties, including myoga ginger, daikon, shiso, and cucumbers, as a living act of remembrance and community.
During the visit, participants reflected on the remarkable impact of Japanese American farmers prior to WWII, when they produced 40% of California’s produce despite farming only 2% of the state’s land. The conversation also connected this history to businesses that continue to thrive today, including Erewhon and Berkeley Bowl, both founded by Japanese and Japanese American families.
