We were proud to honor Seth P. Waxman as a 2026 Pillars of Justice honoree for his extraordinary career in public service, pro bono advocacy, and the law.

A former Solicitor General of the United States and one of the nation’s leading appellate advocates, Seth has also spent decades representing people facing the death penalty and defending voting rights and access to the democratic process.

Across decades of work, Seth has demonstrated what it means to use legal skill and influence in service of people whose rights and voices are most at stake.

At this year’s Pillars of Justice Awards Celebration, we were honored to recognize Reginald Dwayne Betts for his work at the intersection of justice, literature, advocacy, and opportunity.

An acclaimed poet, lawyer, MacArthur Foundation Fellow, and founder of Freedom Reads, Dwayne has transformed his own experience with incarceration into work that expands access to books, learning, and possibility for people behind bars.

Dwayne’s life and leadership continue to challenge assumptions about incarceration while creating new possibilities for others.

We were proud to recognize Kelly Tubman Hardy as a 2026 Pillars of Justice honoree for her longstanding commitment to pro bono service, cross-border collaboration, and expanding access to justice.

Throughout her career, Kelly has used her legal expertise to support vulnerable communities, strengthen international pro bono partnerships, and advance work addressing immigration and access-to-justice challenges in the United States and Mexico.

Kelly’s work is a powerful example of what it means to use professional expertise in service of others.

At this year’s Pillars of Justice Awards Celebration, we were proud to honor Letty Cottin Pogrebin for a lifetime of advocacy, writing, organizing, and leadership in the pursuit of justice.

A founding editor of Ms. Magazine and co-founder of the National Women’s Political Caucus, Letty has spent more than five decades advancing women’s rights, civil rights, peace, and social justice.

We’re grateful to celebrate Letty and the many people whose lives and work she has influenced along the way.

This year, we were proud to recognize Alabama Appleseed Executive Director Carla Crowder as Appleseed’s 2026 Advocate of the Year.

An attorney and former journalist, Carla has become a leading voice in Alabama’s fight against excessive punishment and mass incarceration, helping secure freedom for people once sentenced to spend the rest of their lives in prison.

Carla’s leadership has helped challenge deeply entrenched injustice while creating real pathways to freedom and second chances.

Over seven years with Kansas Appleseed, Haley has helped lead statewide efforts to strengthen food security, expand access to healthy meals, and advance practical policy solutions for Kansas families.

Haley’s work reflects both the impact she has already made and the promise of what is still ahead.
