The Uyghur Freedom Struggle and the Pivotal Role of Uyghur Women

"If we do not stand up to the CCP today, the same tactics—of surveillance, forced labor, and brutal repression—will eventually come for all of us. This is a fight between right and wrong, between good and evil. And we are not just fighting for Uyghurs, or Tibetans, or Falun Gong practitioners, or Christians in China, or Southern Mongolians, or the Taiwanese—we are fighting to protect the freedom and democracy that we have worked so hard to build over centuries and in recent decades in the West. We are shaping our future, and the future of generations to come." - Rushan Abbas

Remembering Tiananmen. Memories and Perspective of Protest Leaders

In 1989, the world witnessed one of the most pivotal moments in modern Chinese history. Hundreds of thousands of students and citizens gathered in Tiananmen Square in Beijing, occupying the space for weeks in a peaceful protest that echoed across the nation. Their demands were clear: an end to official corruption and meaningful political and economic reforms. The Chinese government responded with force. On June 4, 1989, armed troops, tanks, and armored vehicles were deployed into the heart of the capital. Soldiers opened fire on unarmed protesters. Thousands were killed. In the aftermath, the Chinese Communist Party (CCP) launched an extensive effort to erase all references to the Tiananmen Square protests and massacre from public memory.

AFI marked the 36th anniversary of Tiananmen by releasing an edited transcript of a podcast streamed in July 2024.

Today, the Panchen Lama, the longest serving political prisoner in the world and one of Tibet's highest ranking leader, turns 36. We call on Xi Jinping and the CCP to release the Panchen Lama and his family members immediately.

Youngest to the Longest Serving Political Prisoner? Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet.

China’s efforts to protect the landscape, rich biodiversity and environment of the Tibetan Plateau and mitigate climate change ought to be a positive development. However, there is serious concern that this ambitious initiative will lead to displacement of Tibetans, further assimilate Tibetans and Tibet into China, and will primarily benefit the Chinese community. The proposed national park system and drafting of the national parks law is moving ahead rapidly with no input and contribution from the Tibetan people who have lived on the Tibetan Plateau for centuries.
