Since 2019, NPI EXPAND has worked with a diverse range of local organizations in 11 countries to increase demand for, availability of, and use of high-quality high-impact health services and products.

With over US$86 million in funding, NPI EXPAND worked through more than 90 local organizations to address critical health and development challenges, tailoring programs to meet each country’s needs and fostering sustainability.

After five years of implementation, we are closing out this project with pride, knowing that we have pushed the needle on the localization agenda and equipped local organizations with tools for success in the future.

In , Kuyioni Mpusia, a young mother, faced several challenges in accessing essential maternal and reproductive healthcare services.

Thanks to NPI EXPAND's partnership with HealthRight Kenya and Kenya's Ministry of Health, Kuyioni was able to interact with an NPI EXPAND health care worker and she received health advice and counseling after her baby was born.

Kuyioni was determined to pursue her dream of becoming a teacher and opted to take a family planning method, the implant—a long-acting reversible contraceptive that lasts for three years—which will help her meet her goals of finishing her education.

Dreams Rekindled: Aspiring Teacher Finds Hope Through Reproductive Health Outreach In the heart of Nkareta village in Kenya’s Narok county, Kuyioni Mpusia -- a determined young woman -- nurtured her dream of becoming a teacher. However, at the age of 16 and in only her second year at the Nkareta S...

In Mali, 73.8% of girls in Mali are enrolled in primary school, compared with 85.8% of boys that are enrolled in primary school.

Access to education for girls leads to better health outcomes, economic opportunities, and positively impacts their future and the future of their community.

As a part of routine monitoring activities, field agents from NPI EXPAND support and coach community actors to visit households with children to monitor nutritional status and discuss health and gender issues.

During one of these home visits in late 2023, a field agent noticed that the two sisters were not attending school and initiated a series of discussions with their father to explain the benefits of girls’ schooling not only for their own futures, but for the welfare of the community–to which he agreed.

“Having these two girls in my class today is a sign of hope,” says Abdoulaye Tièba Sissoko, a teacher at the Niamiga Primary School.

‼️ NEW BLOG!

Check out a newly published blog, written by NPI EXPAND Project Director, Jeff Barnes, about Diversifying Resource Mobilization Strategies.

Jeff summarizes many of the challenges that countries face when it comes to diversifying funding streams for local NGO's and offers one possible strategy for local organizations—social entrepreneurship—to generate their own sources of revenue.

Check out the blog:

Jeff Barnes, NPI EXPAND Project Director A recent issue of The Economist included a report about the latest trends in philanthropy, including donor collaboratives, effective altruism, trust-based philanthropy, and localization. One passage resonated with me: “Philanthropy in Asia is very different...

To address health inequities in in line with USAID’s localization approach, the USAID-funded New Partners Initiative (NPI) EXPAND project strengthened three local NGOs with both organizational and technical capacity building:

- The National Alliance of Indigenous Women’s Organizations for Reproductive Health, Nutrition and Education (ALIANMISAR)

- The Network of Men of Guatemala (REDHOSEN)

- Network of Young Artists for Social Justice (Jóvenes Artistas por la Justicia Social)

NPI EXPAND’s support is showing results even in a short time as these new NGOs are set to be direct recipients of donor funds.

With these new funds, ALIANMISAR will focus on the quality of care for indigenous women, REDHOSEN on the application of a manual for the participation of men in health services with a gender focus, and JAxJS on the quality of care for family planning services for adolescents.

The rate of child in is among the highest in Sub-Saharan Africa with almost half of deaths for children under five years old attributed to malnutrition.

Aissata, a mother in Mali, was increasingly worried about her daughter’s condition. “I lost all hope of my daughter’s recovery. She had diarrhea and sores in her mouth. She was losing weight day by day because she couldn’t eat properly.”

But with the help of NPI EXPAND to identify and treat malnutrition with , Aissata's daughter had a full recovery. Aissata also uses the recipes she learned from the NPI EXPAND supported Nutrition Action Groups (GSAN) to feed her family nutritious meals.
