A mission of the Perennial Plant Foundation is to obtain funding to provide student scholarships and to support research to enhance the herbaceous perennial industry.

Continuing our 25th year celebration, our next scholar highlight is Kelly Norris. Kelly received a 2006 PPF Scholarship, an experience he credits with introducing him to the people and possibilities of the perennial industry. He is one of the leading ecological horticulturists of his generation and explores the narrative of place through site-specific plantings and landscape interventions in his design practice. He remains active in PPA, co-chairing the 2025 National Symposium in Des Moines, Iowa.

PPF has a long list of amazing Scholar Alumni! As part of our 25th year celebration, we want to highlight some of these outstanding scholars each month, starting with Ben Hoover, Associate Professor of Sustainable Nursery Production in the Plant Sciences Department at California Polytechnic State University (Cal Poly) who received the PPF Scholarship in 2003. Ben's career in horticulture started as a teenager working at a nursery in Pennsylvania and now gets to encourage future PPF scholars and nursery professionals everyday.

The Foundation thanks everyone who donated during the symposium this week! We received $4,380 towards the $5,000 goal (thank you again to Ron Hoffman of Morris Nursery for the matching opportunity!). The Steven Still Family Scholarship Fund will support the future selected scholars in our industry!

Lily Turovsky is our final 2025 PPF Scholar to introduce! She is currently enrolled in Longwood Gardens’ Professional Horticulture Program and graduating this July. Before Longwood, Lily worked as a private gardener, designed floral arrangements for weddings and everyday use, collaborated with various fine-gardening crews, and farmed on both organic vegetable and flower farms.

Trinity Tobe is our next 2025 PPF Scholar! She is a horticulture student at the University of Cincinnati, graduating in December 2025. She is currently as assistant horticulturist at Chanticleer Garden, where she also previously interned, following an earlier internship at the Boone County Arboretum in Northern Kentucky. She is passionate about helping others discover the plants that spark joy and wonder.
