With over a decade of work in environmental science and activism, Kelli Armstrong has been using her voice to call for preserving the natural beauty of her native Bahamas and combating the devastating effects of climate change.

Sparked by her love of the outdoors, especially the beautiful beaches of the Bahamas, Kelli has lent her passion, knowledge and expertise to numerous activism pursuits such as the Trifecta Group which she leads with her siblings and in memory of her late brother and the Anglican Climate Action Committee of the Anglican Diocese of Bahamas and Turks and Caicos.

Kelli serves as a beacon of hope by uniting activists from across the Caribbean diaspora to share knowledge and strategies for collective action as the threat of climate change becomes ever clearer.

The IDB is working with the Bank for International Settlements (BIS) on FuSSE, an initiative that will offer open-source technology to central banks to facilitate payment systems and other settlement infrastructure.

FuSSE is the first project developed under the agreement signed between the IDB and the BIS in 2023 to promote regional financial inclusion.

The initiative has a three-pronged approach to financial inclusion in the region: technological innovation, assistance for the design and implementation of public policy, and institutional capacity building.

The impacts of climate change on the Caribbean have become undeniable in the last decade, with many Caribbean countries experiencing a myriad of challenges. One study showed that global farming productivity had lowered by 21% due to climate change and that the figures were higher in the Caribbean, Africa and Latin America.

Climate-smart agriculture expert Steve Maximay, founder and managing director of Science-Based Initiatives has, for over 20 years, been at the forefront of initiatives in the Caribbean to enhance food production and nutrition security in the face of climate adversity.

A Message for International Mother Earth Day from the United Nations:

Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Nature is suffering. Oceans filling with plastic and turning more acidic. Extreme heat, wildfires and floods, have affected millions of people.

Climate change, man-made changes to nature as well as crimes that disrupt biodiversity, such as deforestation, land-use change, intensified agriculture and livestock production or the growing illegal wildlife trade, can accelerate the speed of destruction of the planet.

This is the third Mother Earth Day celebrated within the UN Decade on Ecosystem Restoration. Ecosystems support all life on Earth. The healthier our ecosystems are, the healthier the planet - and its people. Restoring our damaged ecosystems will help to end poverty, combat climate change and prevent mass extinction. But we will only succeed if everyone plays a part.

For this International Mother Earth Day, let's remind ourselves - more than ever - that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet. Let’s promote harmony with nature and the Earth. Join the global movement to restore our world!
