September is National Service Dog Month 🦮

Guide dogs. Mobility assistance dogs. Medical alert dogs. Psychiatric service dogs. Every day, they show up for their people by opening doors, catching falls, sensing a seizure before it happens, or making the world navigable for someone who needs a partner to get through it.

This month, we’re celebrating them. 🐾

5 things you should know before vet school 🩺

1️⃣ Find your study system early, and make it yours! Active recall, drawing it out, teaching a friend, reviewing on a walk. Test a few in the first few weeks and commit to what sticks.

2️⃣ Your classmates are your greatest resource. Study groups, shared notes, and more!

3️⃣ Say yes to clubs and labs. Suture practice, bovine palpation, exotics club, a random lunch talk. Some of the best career decisions start with showing up out of curiosity.

4️⃣ Protect the things that keep you you. Running, baking, your dog, Sunday calls home. Take care of yourself through the journey!

5️⃣ Every vet you admire started exactly where you are. Asking questions means you’re doing it right.

Year 2 is all about deepening your community, gaining experience, and exploring the field beyond the classroom.

Here’s your College Year 2 (Fall) pathway to veterinary school:
🤝 Join your school’s pre-veterinary society or APVMA to connect with fellow future vets
💛 Get involved in community service through your school (it doesn’t have to be animal-related!) and try to keep it going throughout undergrad
🔬 Attend pre-veterinary enrichment programs and activities outside the classroom to expand your knowledge and experience

Pro tip: Community matters! Surrounding yourself with other pre-vet students gives you built-in support, study buddies, and access to opportunities you might not find on your own. And remember, vet schools love well-rounded applicants, so service and enrichment activities help showcase the full picture of who you are. 🐾

Year 2 is where consistency starts to pay off. Keep showing up, keep building connections, and keep exploring what excites you about this field!
