Fat Tuesday Fact 🎺⚜️Jazz Trumpeter Lois Armstrong (pictured on the left) was crowned king of his Mardi Gras krewe in 1949, and featured as the first African American on the cover of Time magazine.

That Tuesday in 1949, Armstrong set out on a 20-mile parade route in his hometown of New Orleans.

To this day, his music fills the streets of New Orleans and beyond — especially during Mardi Gras!

Much of the tradition and history of Mardi Gras is rooted in New Orleans’ rich African American culture. We are so grateful Auntie Oye continues to bring Mardi Gras to DC!
