The Phyllis Wheatley YWCA was founded in 1905 as a residence for young black women in Washington DC. In 1920 our current building in the heart of the Shaw neighborhood was dedicated as one of the first YWCA's for "colored" women and girls. Prior to integration, the Phyllis Wheatley Y served as a hub of social life and activism for DC's black community and the Civil Rights movement. Even as the city around it has changed with gentrification, the Y stands as a testament to the city's history. Today, the Y serves as a home for women in need. This giving Tuesday consider a donation to the Phyllis Wheatley YWCA. Your contribution will support our efforts to support our residents and preserve the legacy of this historic building.
