ROA Department of The Golden West The Voice of the Reserve Component in California and Nevada.

We operate where other organizations cannot, serving as a trusted advocate for Reserve and National Guard service members--officers, enlisted, families--at every level of government. For more than 100 years the Reserve Officers Association has been the only organization dedicated to supporting Reservists and their critical role in national defense. Reserve service carries unique burdens and for more than nine decades, the Reserve Officers Association has been the nation’s leading advocate for lifelong support in recognition of these unprecedented contributions to the cause of freedom.

Don't miss the Chief of Army Reserve Seminar: Organizational Transformation to Enable the Joint Force this Tuesday at 10:30am ET at the AUSA Annual Meeting and Expo!

The panel, which will be moderated by ROA's CEO, MG John Hashem, USA (Ret.), will examine the U.S. Army Reserve's capabilities available today and the decisions needed to meet the Army’s and Joint Force’s requirements. The discussion will explore what the Army Reserve should preserve, change, and develop; and how its organization, resources, civilian expertise, and innovation support Chief of Army Reserve and USAR CG LTG Robert Harter's commitment, “If you go, we go.”

Panelists will include LTG Harter; MG Frederick Crist, U.S. Army 8th TSC CG; Kristina M. O'Brien, Deputy to the CG, U.S. Army Transportation Command; Liz Tran, founder of AQ Learning Lab; and MAJ Jay Long, Commander, USAR Detachment 201, the Army’s Executive Innovation Corps.

Congratulations to Sgt. 1st Class Kevin Harrington of Mauldin, South Carolina, named the 2026 Drill Sergeant of the Year.

Harrington earned the title after a 72-hour competition at Fort Jackson, South Carolina, that tested 14 noncommissioned officers from 13 active-duty and reserve units through 34 graded events, including an Army Fitness Test, marksmanship instruction, and a leadership board.

"To be a drill sergeant means you are a coach; you are a mentor," Harrington said. "You are a father; you are a chaplain. You are everything and anything to the trainees and future Soldiers of America."

Harrington will now serve in a strategic leadership role at U.S. Army Recruiting Command Headquarters at U.S. Army Fort Knox, Kentucky, advising senior leaders on training policy and helping plan the 2027 competition.
