Devastating and essential reporting from my dear friend Mohammed R. Mhawish in +972 Magazine. We must not turn away from these horrific realities. Even more--we must do all that is in our power to stop them.

Limbs scattered on streets, shelters set ablaze, hundreds stuck in hospitals: Palestinians detail the apocalyptic scenes of Israel’s assault.

Only a few hours left in the campaign, and less than $1,000 to go to reach our 20k stretch goal, supporting families in Gaza and DSP! Can you chip in a few bucks to help us get there?

In 2017, I embarked on my first trek to raise money for Donkeysaddle Projects’ Palestine Grassroots Distribution Project. Many of you supported me as I hiked the 2,653 mile long Pacific Crest Trail, and then as I attempted to summit the higher peaks along the PCT. Your contributions raised over a ...

My annual fundraising trek supports multiple families in Gaza, but two kids at the center of the trek are Mohamad and Abdallah. Mohamad was shot above his knee at the age of 12 by an Israeli soldier, ultimately leading to the amputation of his leg. Abdallah has a rare lung disease; without medication, he struggles to breathe. In my 8 years of trekking/mountain climbing, I experienced a significant difficulty only two summers. In 2019, I had a knee injury; when inflamed, I couldn't bend my knee at all and had to crutch on my trekking poles. This summer, I caught COVID, and my inflamed lungs made climbing mountain passes and long-mile days an arduous, slow struggle. My knee injury in 2019 spurred me to think about Mohamad the entire hike. This summer, my compromised lungs ensured that Abdallah was on my mind constantly. What does it mean that my two major trail setbacks--knee and lungs--mirror the medical conditions of two of the kids at the center of this fundraising endeavor? Beyond helping me access a deeper level of empathy for Mohamad and Abdallah--what other meanings (if any) can I draw from this? As you share your reflections on that, please also consider supporting Mohamad, Abdallah and so many other families in Gaza (as well as Donkeysaddle Projects overall). We're days away from ending the campaign, and so so close to our goal!

Leaving for this year’s fundraising trek feels painful. How can I go off the grid for a month when so many people I love in Gaza are still in such horrible danger? When the needs of families that Donkeysaddle Projects cares for, both those in Gaza and those displaced in Egypt, are so acute? However, that’s what makes this summer’s fundraising trek more important than ever. The money we are raising is urgently needed. It allows us to offer so many families a lifeline to cling to. Please consider donating and please do share. The hike (450 miles on the Continental Divide Trail) begins tomorrow.

Friends: There are two kids from Gaza (16 yo boy named Ramadan and his 11 yo sister named Hanoui) who we helped evacuate to safety in Cairo. They have been alone in Cairo for almost three months now. They are seeking a 3rd country to resettle in, receive an education, etc. Plz message me if you think you can help--whether that's by reaching out to contacts you have, etc.

Today marks 53 rotations around the sun. Hoping hoping hoping that I get a ceasefire for my birthday.
In addition, please consider making a donation today to support families in Gaza, as well as those who have been displaced to Egypt. I head to Cairo next week to check in on many of those families and to assess what the longer-term needs will be. Every dollar helps us do this life-affirming work.
