STATEMENT FROM THE LANGSTON GOLF COURSE CONSERVANCY (ABRIDGED)
Regarding the Termination of National Links Trust Lease and Federal Takeover of D.C.’s Public Golf Courses

The Langston Golf Course Conservancy is deeply troubled by the Trump administration’s decision to terminate the 50-year lease with the National Links Trust and seize control of Washington, D.C.’s three historic public golf courses: Langston, Rock Creek, and East Potomac. This abrupt action undermines years of careful planning, community collaboration, and mission-driven stewardship—and threatens the future of these irreplaceable public assets.
This process raises serious legal and ethical concerns. The claim that National Links Trust failed to act quickly enough ignores the reality of federally required environmental reviews and historic preservation approvals. Renovation at Rock Creek is already underway, supported by world-class architects donating their services pro bono. National Links Trust has proven to be an exemplary steward—reinvesting in infrastructure, prioritizing access, and honoring historic preservation while working closely with community stakeholders.
Langston Golf Course holds profound national significance. Opened in 1939 during segregation, it was one of the few places Black Washingtonians could play golf with dignity. For generations, it has been a gateway to the game, a center for youth education, and one of the region’s most affordable and accessible green spaces. Any move toward federal control or privatization risks higher fees, reduced access, and the erosion of Langston’s community-centered mission.
Our call to action is clear:
• Demand transparency about the administration’s plans
• Support National Links Trust’s efforts to challenge this termination
• Oppose privatization or redevelopment that limits public access
• Protect Langston’s historic and community mission
Washington’s public golf courses belong to the people. Langston is more than a golf course—it is a public trust and a living piece of American history. We stand with the National Links Trust and will continue to advocate fiercely for Langston’s preservation as an affordable, accessible, and historically significant public space for all.
