It's very likely that this was de Looper's first composition using collage. Experimenting with color and structure, he uses overlapping forms in a planar dialog. Organic shapes float and weave in a challenge to the bold, advancing red field. It's dated 1962.

The foundation is delighted to partner with the Art Connection in the Capital Region to facilitate the permanent placement of 20 de Looper paintings in participating nonprofit spaces throughout the Washington area. The ACCR is a nonprofit organization dedicated to expanding public access to original art in underserved communities.

We are grateful that the Woman’s National Democratic Club has generously offered to host this special exhibition and community art donation event.

Willem de Looper: A Brush for Community opens to the public on June 11. To visit the exhibition this summer (M-F, 10:00 am - 4:00 pm, by appointment), contact the Women’s Democratic Club, 1526 New Hampshire Avenue, NW, 202.232.7363.
