Grassroots initiative to reduce single-use plastic & packaging waste in Washington, D.C. Need a reason to reduce the plastic in your life? Here are a few.

Plastic packaging is a climate change problem because plastics are made of fossil fuels and are highly carbon intensive to manufacture. They are also a health hazard as highly toxic pollutants are emitted when plastics are manufactured (and we do not yet know the health effects of the micro-plastics that are showing up in placenta and our blood streams). And, of course, plastic waste pollutes the oceans and other ecosystems. Plastics are everywhere and hard to avoid. But there are ways communities can cut down on plastics. DC Reduces is one way to achieve this goal. DC Reduces is a grassroots initiative started by local residents to reduce single-use plastic and packaging waste in the community. The green and white sticker in the window indicates that the shop is happy to have customers bring in their own bags or other containers.

For the DC locals out there…any guesses as to which neighborhood we canvassed in most recently??

08/28/2023

We love Call Your Mother deli!!! Not just because they make delicious bagels but also because of their great philosophy: “Food is important, but people are the most important ingredient. In addition to being a phenomenal place to eat, we aim to be great neighbors and one of the best places to work!”

They also partner with great organizations like Food Rescue and Martha’s Table to reduce hunger in the community.

And now their Connecticut Avenue location is partnering with DC Reduces to help reduce plastic waste in the community. Bring your own reusable coffee mug to avoid the disposable kind.

What’s not to love?? 💕

Thank you to location manager, Tiana (pictured).

Please welcome C&C Cleaners in Chevy Chase, DC to the DC Reduces initiative. They are the latest dry cleaning business to join the program 😃. ⁣
⁣
If you bring your own garment bag to C&C, they will be happy to package your clean clothes in your bag instead of using the plastic wrap. Remember…300 million pounds of this wrap ends up in landfills in the US every year. No need to add to the pile 😀.⁣
⁣
Thank you, Yong (pictured), for your dedication to the effort. And thank you to owner, Daniel, for saying yes!
