Career exploration becomes more meaningful when students get the opportunity to step into the spaces they are learning about. 💼✨

Recently, Tumaini DC had the opportunity to host students from Anacostia High School for a career exploration visit to Amazon’s headquarters.

It was a chance for students to experience a professional workplace firsthand, connect what they are learning to real career possibilities, and see environments they may one day work in themselves.

Experiences like this matter because career readiness isn’t only about telling young people what opportunities exist. It’s also about giving them the exposure to see those possibilities up close and begin imagining themselves there.

We’re grateful to Anacostia High School for allowing us to be part of this experience and to everyone who helped make the visit possible. 💚

“I felt like a new person.” 🌍🇬🇭

For Tashai, Sankofa Study Abroad became more than eight days in Ghana.

It was experiencing the culture.
Building stronger connections with the people around him.
Becoming more comfortable expressing himself. Learning to communicate better with his peers.

And coming home more open-minded and ready to explore more of what the world has to offer.

Could Miell’s story be the beginning of yours?
Miell’s journey with Tumaini DC started with one recommendation from her mom. 💚

Then came her first Sankofa Saturday.
New friendships.
New connections.
Leadership development.
A community of trusted adults she could lean on.

And eventually, Ghana🇬🇭

For Miell, the Sankofa Study Abroad experience was her first time traveling outside the country and her very first passport stamp. ✈️

Now, as she prepares to begin her freshman year at Norfolk State University, she’s carrying lessons from Tumaini with her: remain true to yourself, know that you are worthy and enough, embrace community, explore beyond what you already know, and never be afraid to put yourself out there.

This is what the Sankofa Global Leadership + Study Abroad Program is about. It’s more than traveling to Ghana. It’s creating experiences that help young people expand how they see themselves, their community, and what’s possible for their future.

A look back at the 2026 Sankofa Global Leadership & Study Abroad Program 🇬🇭

This year’s experience brought together learning, leadership, culture, community, reflection, and connection in ways that made the journey both impactful and memorable.

Throughout the program, participants had the opportunity to experience Ghana beyond the surface - engaging with its people, culture, history, communities, and learning experiences while continuing to grow as young leaders.

The 2026 journey was powerful, and we’re already preparing for an even bigger 2027 Sankofa experience.

Applications for the 2027 Global Leadership & Sankofa Study Abroad Program are now open to high school juniors, high school seniors, and college students who are ready to grow into globally competent, socially conscious leaders.

We also want this opportunity to reach the young people who may not have heard about it yet.

For years, we’ve watched what happens when young people are given the opportunity to see beyond what they’ve always known. 🌍❤️

We’ve watched students get on a plane for the first time. Stand on African soil.
Learn history beyond a textbook.
Serve alongside communities in Ghana.
Sit in university classrooms.
Explore their identity.
Build relationships across cultures.

And come home seeing themselves and what’s possible for their lives—differently. 🥹

That’s why Sankofa has NEVER just been a trip.

Some moments deserve a permanent place on the timeline❤️

On August 7, we closed out an incredible summer at Tumaini DC with our 2026 Annual Celebration of Impact & Showcase - a day centered on what our young people had learned, created, experienced, and accomplished.

Throughout the showcase, students had the opportunity to step forward and share the results of their summer journey, from entrepreneurship and career development to vocational skills, global experiences, leadership, reflection, and personal growth.

One of the highlights was our Innovation Academy Pitch Competition, where students took the ideas they had been developing and presented them before an audience. Our top pitches were recognized with cash awards:

🏆 1st Place — $500
🥈 2nd Place — $350
🥉 3rd Place — $250

But the day was bigger than the awards.

We celebrated students who found the confidence to stand in front of a room and share their ideas. We recognized the growth that happened behind the scenes. We honored members of our community who poured into our young people.

And we brought together students, staff, partners, families, and supporters to see what happens when young people are given opportunities to learn, explore, create, and lead.

Impact. Innovation. Growth.
And young people realizing what they are capable of.
