In periods of heightened civic debate, the strength of institutions is tested. Sustainable reforms require structured dialogue, institutional engagements, and negotiation across differences.
Cameroon's Stability depends on strengthening these processes.

As Pope Leo XIV prepares to visit Cameroon under the theme of peace and reconciliation, this moment must go beyond symbolism. At a time when many communities continue to experience the social and economic strain of prolonged instability from disrupted education and displacement to weakened livelihoods and trust the call for peace must translate into measurable action. We urge public authorities, institutional leaders, faith communities, and civic actors to use this moment to renew commitment to durable stability, strengthen inclusive engagement mechanisms, and prioritize the protection of affected populations. Hope is powerful, but sustainable peace requires structure, responsibility, and decisive follow-through.

Cameroon's Anglophone crisis has killed over 6,500 people and displaced approximately 584,000 (including 493,000+ IDPs and 73,000 refugees in Nigeria) since 2017. 1.8 million need aid; 250,000 children face school closures. Recent attacks, like the January 2026 Gidado killings, show violence persists.

The Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations (CDN) holds that only inclusive negotiations without preconditions can address root causes and deliver justice, reconciliation, and lasting peace.

On February 14, 2020, at least 21 civilians including 13 children and a pregnant woman lost their lives in the Ngarbuh tragedy in Cameroon’s Northwest Region.

Six years later, we pause to remember the victims, honor their memory, and stand in solidarity with the survivors and affected communities. Their loss reminds us of the urgent need to protect civilians, promote dialogue, and work toward lasting peace.

Justice, accountability, and reconciliation remain essential for healing and preventing future tragedies. Remembering is not only about the past it is also about building a more peaceful future for all.

Is U.S. democracy support strengthening African institutions — or reinforcing dependency?

In this first episode of African Bridges, host Ngalim Bernard speaks with Jude A Mutah , professor at the University of Baltimore and former program officer at the National Endowment for Democracy.

We examine:

• Has U.S. democracy funding improved governance in Africa?
• Why do coups receive public support in parts of the Sahel?
• Is foreign aid creating accountability — or weakening sovereignty?
• Why is civil society collaboration stronger in Nigeria than in Cameroon?
• Does democracy funding reflect local priorities or donor interests?

This conversation addresses U.S.–Africa relations, democracy assistance, civil society accountability, electoral reform, aid dependency, and the future of governance across the continent.

🚨 ADVOCACY ALERT | AFRICA CRISIS | JAN 2026
Across Africa, civilians continue to bear the brunt of protracted conflict, climate shocks, and political failures. In Cameroon, communities in the North West, South West, and Far North regions face ongoing violence, displacement, and the collapse of livelihoods, education, and basic services, while similar patterns of civilian suffering persist in Sudan, DR Congo, the Sahel, and flood-affected Southern Africa. These interconnected crises are not inevitable; they reflect sustained inaction and weak protection mechanisms. We call for the immediate protection of civilians, unhindered humanitarian access, accountability for abuses, and inclusive political solutions in Cameroon and across Africa.

The Coalition for Dialogue and Negotiations condemns the renewed attacks on civilians in Cameroon’s North West and Far North regions, including reported night raids, looting, forced displacement, and allegations of sexual violence in Mbandfung village, as well as the abduction of the Principal of Mora Technical High School by suspected Boko Haram fighters.

These incidents are not isolated they reflect a deepening protection crisis and a continued failure to safeguard civilian lives.

CDN demands that Cameroon authorities immediately strengthen civilian protection in high-risk communities, conduct independent and transparent investigations into all reported abuses, ensure accountability for perpetrators, guarantee urgent medical and psychosocial support for survivors especially women and children secure schools and educators, and allow full, unhindered access for humanitarian and human rights actors.

Civilian lives are not collateral damage. Protection is an obligation. Action cannot wait.

Another night of terror in Ldama, Far North families traumatised, shops looted, and no security response. When people live in fear of attacks like this, peace isn’t just urgent it’s imperative. Cameroon’s civilians deserve protection, dialogue, and solutions that end violence now.

Suspected Boko Haram Fighters Terrorize Far North Locality in Nighttime Attack

Ldama, a locality in the Mayo-Tsanaga Division of the Far North Region of Cameroon, endured a night of anguish on Wednesday, January 21.

According to consistent testimonies from local residents, elements believed to be from Boko Haram stormed the locality yesterday evening around 9 pm, spreading panic until around 11 pm.

The attackers targeted the small market, located between the public school and the Protestant church, looting several shops. The attack left families traumatized and a deep sense of abandonment among residents.

No intervention by security forces was reported during the incursion, leaving the population to fend for themselves. A more precise assessment of the damage is ongoing. Beyond the facts, emotion mixes with indignation.

The protracted crisis in Cameroon is not only a security challenge it is a growing economic emergency. Ongoing violence in the North West and South West regions has crippled agriculture, trade, and small businesses, eroding livelihoods and pushing families deeper into poverty. Insecurity and repeated lockdowns have disrupted productivity, deterred investment, and diverted public resources from development to security spending. At CDN, we stress that without urgent action to protect civilians and prioritize inclusive dialogue, the economic toll will continue to undermine national growth and long-term stability. Sustainable peace is essential for economic recovery.
