From the Senior Area Director

“We are proud of you for the life that you lived.” I heard those words recently while attending the funeral Mass of IVC National Capital Area service corps member Mike Bates. The words were shared by his son David as a eulogy for his father, remembering his dad’s abiding kindness as a parent and grandparent. What a beautiful tribute, simple yet profound, for a man who could also be remembered for his military service in Vietnam, his legal career in service to the federal government and his IVC work with OAR of Arlington, Alexandria and Falls Church.

In fact, the Ignatian Volunteer Corps is likewise proud of the lives that everyone reading this occasional newsletter has made in the various roles and commitments that characterize the IVC commitment. Eighty-five of you serve one or two days weekly helping to improve the lives of men and women coping with the cruelty of poverty. Thirty more of you meet monthly one on one with our service corps members to help them reflect on how they see God’s presence in the work that they do. Twenty of you advise me quarterly as members of our Regional Advisory Council. Two of you work with me weekly as program staff. Hundreds more generously give one or more times per year to provide the resources that allow our region to grow and thrive. It is so important to acknowledge these gifts of time, talent and treasure.

Read on in this issue to learn more about an IVC National Capital Area couple that is making service a family affair – father working with son in distinct roles with the Father McKenna Center on the campus of Gonzaga College High School. IVC also stepped up recently to secure some overnight lodging for a large college group from St. Joseph’s University in Philadelphia traveling to an alternative spring break trip to Appalachia – recruiting for the long run, helping people still a half century away from considering membership in IVC.

Wishing you all a blessed Holy Week and a Happy Easter season ahead!

With gratitude,

Mike Goggin, M.A.
Senior Area Director

The Starkenburg Family – Putting Faith into Action!

IVC of the National Capital Area is delighted to have Nancy Shea-Starkenburg and her husband Bruce as members – with the added bonus that their son, Robert, is on staff at IVC partner agency Father McKenna Center – where Bruce serves!

Nancy, a retired elementary school teacher and reading interventionist, is currently in her fourth year serving at IVC partner agency St. Joseph’s Regional Catholic School in Beltsville. “I feel blessed to be able to use my teaching skills in my service placement,” she says of working one-on-one or with small groups of students in need of reading support. “It’s a very powerful tool for teaching kids to read, because you can tailor the lesson for exactly what they need.”

Nancy serves two days per week at St. Joseph’s, and feels rewarded by seeing progress in her students’ reading abilities. “I’m still seeing the effects of the pandemic on some who lost ground with their reading skills. If you don’t learn to be a fluent reader by third grade, it’s difficult to catch up after that.” The school also has a significant Hispanic population, and Nancy tutors some native Spanish speakers over the course of a few years as they learn English.

A native of Long Island and an alumna of St. John’s University, Nancy learned of IVC after reading about the organization and thought “this is what I want to do in retirement.” She loves getting to know IVC members because “to a person they have all had very impressive careers and they are choosing to give back in some way. They are full of gratitude for blessings given in their life, and are such humble people, and interested in sharing their faith with others – and giving their time to help the marginalized.”

Bruce, who retired last year following a career in IT with the National Institute of Standards and Technology, has been with the Father McKenna Center since joining IVC early in 2026. As a family, the Starkenburgs previously volunteered together there a few times, even once on Christmas morning. These experiences served as an incentive for his placement.

Every Friday, he performs a variety of assignments – including washing dishes, serving meals to guests and sorting food in the pantry. “I really enjoy the people here, both the staff and the guests, and it’s a chance to give back a little bit to people who need a ‘leg-up,’” he said. He joins fellow IVC members Mary Cahill, Don Kisicki, Abbe Nuccio and Joe Kenny in service there.

Bruce, a Florida native, received his undergraduate and graduate degrees from The Catholic University of America. He learned more about IVC through Nancy’s experiences, and also about others and the great work they do, so it was a natural fit for his post-retirement career. “It’s wonderful to see the generosity of heart that IVC members show in their ministries. Everybody serves in different ways, and we all celebrate one another’s successes.”

Their son, Robert, has been on staff at the Father McKenna Center since 2024, where he serves as both the intake and hypothermia program coordinator. His responsibilities include managing the front desk area, the day program and keeping track of food donations to the pantry. From November to March, he oversees the hypothermia program for about ten men, ensuring overnight accommodations at the center. A graduate of Gonzaga College High School and the University of Maryland, Robert also served with the Jesuit Volunteer Corps in Scranton for one year. “I learned at Gonzaga to be a man for others and it’s something that I strive to do in my work here.”

IVC at March 7 Diocese of Arlington Peace and Justice Conference

There was a full house at the Diocese of Arlington Peace and Justice Conference: Immigration and the Church's Prophetic Voice on Saturday evening March 7, 2026. IVC had an information table in the narthex of Nativity Catholic Church in Burke, Va. as parishioners and conference attendees arrived for the 5:00 pm Mass with the Most Reverend Michael Burbidge, Bishop of Arlington, as Celebrant. Several friends and members of the IVC community were in attendance including Mary Anne Cummins, Janet Pedneau, Mike Hart, Anne Murphy and staff member Anna Marie Mason.

Following an introduction by Msgr. Robert Cilinski, Bishop Evelio Menjivar-Ayala, Auxiliary Bishop of Washington, delivered an outstanding keynote address. Bishop Burbidge gave the homily at Mass and presented as part of the recorded Q&A after the keynote address.

Saint Joseph’s University Students Find Overnight Lodging
Thanks to IVC-NCA!
by Christine Eberle

Do you know anyone in Northern Virginia?!? The frantic text came from my friend Tricia Riordan, a campus minister at Saint Joseph’s University here in Philadelphia. Tricia runs SJU’s Appalachian Experience (APEX) spring break service program. In 22 days, she was sending 135 students to nine service sites in five states. Those with the longest drives were supposed to leave after Friday classes and stop just past DC to grab a few hours’ sleep before getting back on the road. Now, housing had fallen through for 75 students! Tricia had been working every network she could think of, to no avail. But there’s nothing quite like the IVC network!
I wrote to Mike Goggin, Regional Director of IVC’s National Capital Area. My email was titled, “A Friend in a Jam.” His response was brief: “Pursuing a couple leads for you on this.” Less than 48 hours later, I received this message from Tricia: “I got housing for everyone! Mike Goggin is the best. Everyone keeps mentioning him.”
Here’s what happened. Mike reached out to Fr. Bill Quigley, CICM, one of IVC’s spiritual reflectors. Fr. Bill is part of Missionhurst’s Mount Tabor community, whose retreat house in Vienna hosts one of IVC’s monthly meetings. There, he had space for the 31 students with the longest drive. Mike also reached out to Jo-Ann Duggan, pastoral associate at St. John Neumann Parish in Reston and regional council member for IVC-NCA. Through Jo-Ann, St. John Neumann was able to provide gym floor space for the remaining 44 students to sleep on air mattresses. It should come as no surprise that both sites went above and beyond, warmly welcoming the students, making them breakfast at the crack of dawn, and sending them off with snacks.
To me, this whole story reflects IVC’s core value of Collaboration and Partnership: “working together with laity, clergy, and people of goodwill, supporting their gifts and ministries.” The web of connection between and within regions is a marvel to behold, as is the generosity of God’s people. I am grateful to be a small part of such a great cloud of witnesses!

This group of St. Joseph's University students is especially grateful for the overnight lodging found with the help of IVC- NCA!

IVC of the National Capital Area salutes Area Catholic Schools!

IVC is delighted to salute our local Catholic schools for Catholic Schools Week - delayed by snow closings this year in the Washington, DC area to February 1- 6.

The theme for this year is “Catholic Schools: United in Faith and Community.”

Catholic schools have an irreplaceable role in the Church’s evangelizing mission. Building on the central goal of Catholic schools to form saints, Catholic schools teach and embrace the whole person, body, mind and spirit. The fact that all members of a Catholic school community share the Christian vision of faith that Christ is the foundation of Catholic education is what unites the school as a faith-filled community.

While faith is the binding element in Catholic schools, the Church reiterates that parents are the first teachers of their children. Holding this tenet, Catholic school communities expand beyond the walls of school buildings to envelop the family as an integral part of the school community. Together teachers, administrators, staff, students and parents fuel the light of faith by integrating culture with faith and faith with living.

Fr. Greg Boyle SJ – Keynote Speech Fosters Connection
at Ignatian Family Teach - In for Justice

Fr. Greg Boyle served as the keynote speaker on November 15 at the 2025 Ignatian Family Teach - in for Justice (IFTJ), held at the Marriott Crystal Gateway in Arlington, VA.

Since October, IVC city groups have been discussing Boyle’s most recent book, Cherished Belonging. Group discussions have been rich and challenging as IVC members contemplate in depth Boyle’s concept of “hidden wholeness,” and statements such as “I’ve never met anyone evil…and neither have you.”

IVC members within their city groups discussed Chapter 3, “The Blindfold,” of Cherished Belonging on December 17 at the annual IVC Christmas gathering, held this year at St. Benedict’s Monastery in Bristow, VA.
