Salmon Brook Historical Society The Salmon Brook Historical Society is a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and promoting agricultural history in Aroostook County, Maine.

Our museum is located in Washburn, Maine at 1267 Main Street. We are group of local volunteers who help maintain both a furnished homestead and an agricultural barn. Both buildings house historical artifacts and equipment used by Aroostook County farmers from the past. Free tours are available to the public Weds. mornings and Sunday afternoons and any other time by appointment throughout the summer months. The museums are closed during the winter.

It’s time for all, good busy bees to lend a hand…errr…wing…to get the museums closed up for the winter. If you have some spare time, please come on Friday, Oct 9th at 10 AM.
Anyone who is available to help is welcome. We will be draining the water, covering the windows with the blackout curtains, putting plastic on the barn doors, covering the carriages , etc. Many hands make light work!

Washburn August Festival’s Books and Baskets is happening NOW! Stop by the Washburn Memorial Library from now until August 15th to check out all the available baskets. The Historical Society has put together quite the basket! All proceeds from the raffle will benefit the local library.

Come visit the "Wonderful Washburn" exhibit featuring artwork highlighting all things Washburn by student artists from the David J. Lyon Washburn Elementary School. The project is part of a cooperative project with the Washburn Rotary Club to develop banners which will hang all along Main Street. Their artwork will be on display all summer. Meghan Cole’s 2nd Graders from MSAD #1’s Pine Street School spent a day learning about the life and times of the past as far back as the 1850’s. With the help of the volunteers at the museums, they got to see how families worked to get the food they needed and how to care for their homes and farms, and they had fun doing it!

One of the best parts of having such a great museum is being able to share it with the next generation of history buffs! MSAD #1’s Mapleton Elementary School’s 2nd graders visited last week and were treated to an enjoyable tour of both the Wilder House and the Agricultural Museums. Our wonderful volunteers know how to make learning fun and meaningful!

End of year school tours have begun! 4th graders from Zippel Elementary School were welcomed on Monday by Aaron Skinner, Jim and Patty Reed, Carol White, and Keith Brown. 32 students and teachers Kelli Beaulieu, Jennifer Espling, Lori Hudson, and Susan Bagley enjoyed their visit and trip back in time with the volunteer guides.

The Museum is now open for the summer!

OPEN SUNDAYS 1PM- 4PM June 7th – September 6th and by appointment.

Come check out these and many other exhibits:

Learn about Benjamin Cushing Wilder who built the house in 1852 and is now the museum.

View the exhibit devoted to Eldora Jardine, a Washburn native and the first woman in Maine to receive a private pilot’s license.

See the uniform of Louise Maskell the only known Washburn native to serve in the Women’s Army Corps during World War II.

View the collection of hand tools from Wade native Basil Fox.

Spring has Sprung, and it’s time to put winter to bed and think about summer days at the Museum!

We plan to open the museum this coming Monday, May 18th at 9 AM. If you are available, we would welcome a helping hand. The two biggest items are taking down the blackout curtains and restoring the water. Many hands make light work and it will actually be fun…we promise. Come join us and bring a friend!

We will hold our first meeting on May 28th at 6 PM at Carol White's, 166 Cross Road. We will have a potluck dinner to start, followed by the business meeting.

We have at least two school tours planned this year so far. Any help with the tours would be greatly appreciated. If you are available please let Aaron know as he is the tour coordinator this year. (207) 498-9269.
