On Saturday, October 10th we held the inaugural "Hues & History at the Hatchery" tour and presentation. Who would have guessed we could have 80 degree temperatures this time of year?! A wonderful day to hold the event. Attendees were given an overview of the history of the grounds and the people, the plans for restoration, historic garden updates, a recap of our archiving and research efforts and a sneak peek at a children's book that's in the works! After all that, the attendees then took a guided walking tour to the old Red Dam that was built to fill the ponds when the state started here in 1897. We finished with a tour and question and answer for some of the current fish rearing operations along with some great cookies and apple c***r! Thanks to all who attended and stay tuned as we plan to expand the tours and presentations next year!

Spend any amount of time on Lake Superior and you'll know about the incredible currents. The Chippewa name Gitche Gumee translates into "The Great Sea". Click on the image and you can see a great visual of a week of surface water temps and movement of water. The data was captured earlier this month. It's pretty astounding. Happy Sunday.

Autumn is a beautiful time in our neck of the woods. This week, a couple of our board members worked on some nice touches to the grounds and the building! C'mon out and take a look! Have a great weekend everyone!

Fall is here this week. The Dahlias and gladiolus are still very pretty and the mums got snuck in there by our faithful grounds and gardens crew. Highlight of the week is the annual monarch migration. They've been coming thru in droves, headed on their annual 2,000 mile trek. Travel safe our friends. We look forward to your return next spring!

Happy Labor Day. Hatching, culturing and stocking fish takes "Labor". Last week, 130,093 young brown trout were transferred from the Bayfield hatchery to the St Croix Falls hatchery for over-wintering and grow out. Next spring they will return, much larger, to be stocked into the western Superior basin. Hug a fish hatchery worker. We need every one of them and more!

"Creel survey". The science of identifying the numbers of fish raised by state hatcheries that are returned in anglers harvest. A simple fin clip (in this case, the adipose fin) identifies the fish as hatchery raised. Dedicated group of fish hatchery staff from Bayfield and Spooner carried out the task this week, clipping thousands of trout in the Les Voigt facility. We thank them for their work on behalf of the public!

August 10 and the grounds look spectacular folks. The Dahlias are blooming with exotic names like "Ivanetti", and "Café au lait", and "Miranda Mikayla". The geraniums are bold red and beautiful. The first salmon color gladiolus are starting and the Canna Lilies have begun their late summer bloom. C'mon out and peruse the re-creation of what was here at the turn of the 20th century! Nice job by the garden crew as they reawaken history!

One of the greatest parts of this historic restoration effort, is being able to talk to, listen to, and laugh with- KIDS. They ask great questions, have vivid imaginations and they laugh like mad when you joke with them about fish. They are the future and we need to listen to them and encourage them! Great crowd today at Washburn Brownstone Days and we thank them for their solid organizing and promotion. Even on a pretty warm day, we had visitors for the entire 6 hours. Kept us lively and on our toes with questions on construction, diaries, hiking trails, staff, facility history, bats and of course... FISH! Loved it.
