Historians debate the question of who started the Stonewall Uprising in 1969, but the two people most often credited were trans women of color: Marsha P. Johnson, a Black trans woman, and Sylvia Rivera, a trans Latina woman. Whether it's the truth or just legend, these two icons are forever remembered for standing up to abusive police and beginning the modern fight for LGBTQ+ rights, safety, and recognition. On the first day of Pride Month, we want to remember them as heroes and fellow New Yorkers.
