The Buckeye Brook Coalition, a state designated Watershed Council, was formed to focus attention on Buckeye Brook and its watershed, which are located in Warwick, Rhode Island. The brook plays a significant role in nature's life cycle. Buckeye Brook and Warwick Lake are the spawning grounds of the blue back herring and alewives. This brook is self-sustaining and unique, having no fish ladders or p

assage system to aid the herring in their migration between the sea and Warwick Lake at spawning time. It's salt marsh plays a vital role as a natural filtration system and vegitative buffer for Narragansett Bay. It is also spawning ground for shrimp and many other smaller bay inhabitants. Shorebirds feed off the fish, worms, crabs and clams in this rich habitat. The major goal of the Buckeye Brook Coalition is to protect and preserve this natural treasure and the future of blue back herring and alewives who annually spawn in these waters. It supports activities that work to clean-up debris in the brook and surrounding areas and promote good water quality. It advocates for protection of the brook and it's wetlands from destruction and focuses attention on situations and policies that endanger it's well being.

In a recent posting about a tree Vs. The Buckeye Brook Coalitions paddling fleet. It has been determined that replacing the fleet won't be necessary. The reason that some individuals are afraid that such BBC events open up the possibility of law suits. So as of today I will be resigning as V.P. of the BBC. I suggest that you take some time to review this pages history and photos. They will will reflect the many accomplishments, events, special projects that I have happy to have been involved with over my tenure since 2002. I plan on deleting this page in 1 months time. I would like to offer my deepest appreciation to all of you whom I have come to know over the years. I thank you all for your support and help. I encourage you to continue your support of The Buckeye Brook Coalition. However for me I am just worn out. Goodbye my friends maybe I will see some of you near the water soon.

I am sad to report that one week ago Aug.05th,2024 the entire Buckeye Brook Coalition paddling fleet was destroyed in a matter of seconds. A tree at the edge of my property was struck by lightning around 4:00 AM. At 6:10 AM The neighborhood was awakened by a tremendous crash. The large red oak approx. 18" in diameter crashed through the Kayak rack. and my neighbor's roof & completely destroyed her car. The 17' Old Towne canoe, My 14' Old Towne Tandem Kayak & two oars, 8" fiberglass dinghy and 16' Sundowner Sailfish Thank God nobody was hurt. Unfortunately, that ended all paddle trips in the future. Everything was destroyed beyond repair

Help the Fish in Buckeye Brook!

Volunteer to participate in the annual fish count.

The Buckeye Brook Coalition is the RI State Designated Local Watershed Council for the Buckeye Brook Watershed, and in Cooperation with the RI Department of Environmental Management, Division of Fish & Wildlife, is recruiting volunteers for training and to participate in the 2024 Annual Direct Fish Count.

How to Help: Volunteer to Count Fish in Buckeye Brook in Warwick, R.I.

Event: RI DEM River Herring Count 2024.

Where: Buckeye Brook at Warwick Avenue.

To Sign Up - Click this link: https://forms.office.com/g/D7RXYeZ0Da

What is the Annual Fish Count? The annual fish count is where volunteers get together to participate during the River Herring / fish migration season from April 1 through May 30th each year to observe and count fish in our local watershed where the fish swim upstream to spawn. It's fascinating to watch!

Buckeye Brook Fish Habitat: Buckeye Brook is a natural habitat and underwater maternity ward for River Herring, which annually swim from the Ocean, through Narragansett Bay, through Buckeye Brook in Warwick, where they swim as far north as Spring Green Pond in Hoxsie to lay their eggs, before returning to the sea. For many reasons, including climate changes, stream blockages, and over fishing, fish stocks can vary from year to year.

Agencies like the US Fish and Wildlife Service and RIDEM Fish & Wildlife maintain data which is used for fisheries management. This impacts Commercial and Recreational Fishing in RI and our economy.

Why Count Fish? Fish counts are used for many reasons, including fisheries management and to ensure that species survive from depletion. Annual Fish Count statistics are compiled from our local fish counts and similar counts around the United States, where the numbers can be compared year to year to assess the health of fish stock levels and to best manage fish stocks over a wide geographic area through local and national efforts. It's also a fun volunteer activity.

Good morning we could still use some help this morning to gather and bag litter.

March 6, 2024 Please read Volunteers needed

Dear Friends of Buckeye Brook Coalition,

Last week I became aware of a very dense litter area at a previous homeless encampment in the woods off Old Warwick Ave. Most of the litter has been thrown down an embankment into the swamp. Retrieval would require volunteers with the proper skills to navigate swampy conditions wearing waders. I have 3 people available to handle that job. We will collect the litter and toss it to dry ground above, where it can be collected into bags and transported to the street.
I need at least 3-6 people this Friday morning 03/08/24 from 9:00-12:00. To help gather and bag the litter. Volunteers will be required to sign a liability waiver form in order to participate. Also should wear long sleeves and pants, sturdy footwear, & sturdy gloves. A baseball cap would be recommended to help protect your head. The area is fairly dry & flat has many pathways, but there are thorns to be careful of.
I can supply long handle grabber tools,5 gallon buckets & bags. We just need some of your time and effort to put this area back the way it should be.
If you plan on volunteering for this event. Please contact me, so I can better coordinate the cleanup

Thank you for all your past & continued support.

Hello Friends! There are a couple of small projects which need to be handled soon. 1st, is a stream blockage that will interfere with the annual herring run. This will require people who own waders and some tools that could help remove some downed tree limbs. The second will require about 4-6 people for a litter field in swamp like area. If interested please go to our website https://buckeyebrook.org/ find Paul Earnshaw in the Contact us link Thank you!
