Every Girl Scout carries something powerful within her.
This summer, Girl Scouts from across GSSNE brought that message to life with an award-winning Fourth of July parade float inspired by the theme, "Find What's Within." The float was recognized by the Bristol, RI 4th of July Committee as Most Original, celebrating the creativity, craftsmanship, and teamwork behind this incredible project.
Inspired by an iconic New England setting, the float featured a boat representing Discover, a lighthouse symbolizing Reveal, and a giant quahog representing Become—the journey every Girl Scout takes as she discovers her passions, reveals her talents, and grows into a confident leader. At the heart of the quahog was a giant pearl honoring Girl Scout Founder Juliette Gordon Low, who sold her rare pearls to propel the movement more than a century ago.
Over six months, a team of 45 Girl Scouts and adult volunteers collaborated to design, build, and prepare the float. Along the way, girls gained hands-on experience in leadership, communication, project management, problem-solving, and teamwork. For one Girl Scout, the experience sparked something even bigger. She discovered a passion for the skilled trades and now hopes to pursue a career building homes—a powerful example of how hands-on opportunities can help girls discover new interests and imagine new possibilities for their futures.
The project was made possible through the dedication of many volunteers and community partners who shared their expertise and resources. Kite Architects provided design sketches that transformed the team’s ideas into a buildable vision. Christopher Hoyt of FirstWorks Providence offered outstanding dedication, creative guidance and hands-on support throughout the process. Millie Massey and Moses Brown Performing Arts lent valuable creative resources and materials. GSSNE Board Member Anita Bruno, Founder and CEO of RI Women in the Trades, and Cheryl Benn of Gilbane Building provided construction expertise and resources, helping volunteers navigate the challenges of a large-scale build. Twiggs Automotive of Warren, RI, a fierce and long-time supporter of Girl Scouts, generously provided the flatbed trailer that served as the foundation for the float.
As the float paraded through historic Bristol, it carried a message far beyond the parade route: every girl has within her the courage, creativity, and potential to make a difference. The Most Original award recognized more than a beautiful float—it celebrated the spirit of Girl Scouting and what happens when girls find what's within and let their light shine.
