Rhode Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cancer Survivors Support Group

Rhode Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cancer Survivors Support Group Our goal is to educate, support, and empower Deaf and Hard of Hearing who are impacted by cancer. Both of those times she experienced shock and bewilderment.

The Rhode Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cancer Survivor Support Group educates, supports, and empowers Deaf and Hard of Hearing people who are impacted by cancer. We aim to ensure that all receive the support and knowledge they need at all stages of their cancer journey by sponsoring workshops with speakers on various topics of interest, a place where members of our community can socialize toget

her and get emotional support. Bonnie Abols, our founder and a cancer survivor, lost her husband to a rapidly spreading cancer and a few years later faced a diagnosis of breast cancer herself. She was forced to maneuver a health care system that is difficult for all of us, with the addition of communication barriers. After successfully beating her cancer, she sought to make sure that other Deaf and Hard of Hearing people have a source of information and support. Bonnie is well qualified to lead the efforts, having earned a Master’s Degree in Adult Education from the University of Rhode Island and years of experience as an Independent Living Counselor for the Deaf and Hard of Hearing, but others are needed to carry our vision forward.

The Rhode Island Deaf and Hard of Hearing Cancer Survivor Support Group is hoping to offer an 8 week Grief Recovery Method Support Group. Are you interested?
Most emotional distress is set in grief that is ignored. Many people receive incorrect information about grief. Time does not heal all wounds and grievers do not go through five stages.
Learn what is proven to be effective. Be guided to take action steps to increase your ability to move forward, heal your heart, and rebuild your life with group support. The method helps with 48 different kinds of loss experiences related to divorce, pets, change in health, career, faith, financial status, and/or loss of trust and safety from abuse.

If you are stuck in grief, don't just wait to feel better, learn what to do
Let Bonnie Abols know at [email protected]
Your insurance might be able to cover the cost. If not, RIDHHCSSG asks you to pay $40 for the 8 workshops. Classes will be on Saturdays. We don’t have the dates yet.

During yesterday's event, hosted at Rhode Island College, group members learned more about skin cancer with Meghan King MSN, FNP-BC. The dermatologist shared tips for prevention, answered questions, and provided samples of sunblock products.

This event was sponsored by the Rhode Island College Alumni Association (RIC), Rhode Island College disability services, and Rhode Island Commission on the Deaf and Hard of Hearing.

Events like this provide our members with a community, educational resources, and support to face challenges as a cancer survivor.

Happy Deaf Awareness Month!

Facing cancer diagnosis and receiving the proper resources/care can be challenging, but members of the Deaf community do not need to face it alone.

We’re so thankful for the community we’ve built in our organization.

Many of our group members are alumni, so we're always thankful for the opportunity to return to connect with the community!

A big thank you to the RIC Foundation and RIC Disability Services Center, as we will be returning to RIC for our upcoming event!

“Thank you alumna Bonnie Abols '82 for partnering with the RIC Foundation, RIC Disability Services Center and our Alumni Association for safely bringing together a support group for deaf and hard of hearing cancer survivors to campus! ”

Meet Bonnie, the creator of our group.

"There were so many things I didn't feel like doing, but I didn't pity myself," said Bonnie about her experience with breast cancer. in 2012.

"I always tried to think of something positive. Starting a support group was one of those things."

In addition to hosting the group, Bonnie enjoys sewing pillow cases for children with cancer. She aims to create 1000 of them.

"I never stop and you should never stop doing what you love."
